A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1062

When Yvonne suggested Fairfax take Starla to Yoran Country and release her halfway, Amos had rejected it outright, simply because he hadn't wanted to sever ties with Fairfax.

And now Fairfax was doing this? Poking the bear?

The air between them turned explosive. Fairfax's breathing was heavy.

"I might not have your resources," Amos said coldly, "but I'm far more willing to lay my life on the line than you are!"

During the incident with General Licht, Amos had thought he and Fairfax were cut from the same clothโ€”men who would die for the women they loved. But he realized he was wrong. When push came to shove, the woman Fairfax supposedly loved didn't mean a damn thing.

Amos, on the other hand, had cut off his own family for Yvonne.

Every word Amos spoke dripped with danger. "Don't push me into kicking you out of Cyrus Sea."

Fairfax had some influence here, but his roots were in Marina City. His local power was nowhere near as entrenched as Amos's. In a turf war, Fairfax wouldn't necessarily win.

Fairfax's eyes narrowed, his gaze turning even colder at Amos's ruthless words.

"If we start tearing each other apart, the only ones who benefit are Herbert Farley and Yardley Hoggart," Amos warned. "But think about it very carefully. If you really target Yvonne, I'll burn Cyrus Sea to the ground."

He didn't care if it all went up in flames. But could Fairfax afford that?

Fairfax's expression grew even darker.

Amos left, furious. Fairfax sat in silence for a long time, reeling. His chest felt crushed under an unbearable weight. Amos was backing him into a corner, Starla was relentless, and Amos was ready to kill him. The pressure from all three sides was suffocating.
