A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1085

It was all his fault. Everything had spiraled out of control because of him.

A sharp, agonizing pain seized his chest.

"Running in there blindly won't save her!" Amos warned. "We need a concrete plan."

If they wanted her back, they needed to be absolutely certain of success.

"How long is that going to take?" Fairfax demanded. "I don't have time to wait!"

Planning took time, and he couldn't afford to waste another second.

"We plan first!" Amos snapped, grabbing Fairfax and hauling him back.

He knew Fairfax was desperate, but what good would recklessness do? Going in half-cocked would not only fail to save Starla, but it would likely get Fairfax killed, too. Lazar's hatred for Fairfax and Starla was deeply rooted in his brother's death.

...

The news quickly reached Herbert and Yardley.

The men Yardley had deployed to search for Starla immediately converged on the Shark Sea. He was absolutely livid.

As soon as Herbert got the update, he did the same.

Starla had since been discharged from the hospital.

Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows of the wooden villa in Smaro Town, a thick layer of snow blanketed the landscape. It looked freezing, but inside, it was toasty. The crackle of the fireplace was soothing.

Still, Herbert gently draped a thick blanket over her, paying special attention to her injured leg. He was meticulously careful, terrified she might develop chronic pain that would flare up whenever the weather changed.

She continued to ignore him completely.

"Everyone's attention has shifted to Licht's brother now," Herbert said casually. "They'll soon receive news of your death."

She looked at him. "You set that up?"

"I did."

"If you really can't let it go, you can take it out on me."

He pulled out a handgun and pressed it into her palm.

"You..."

"Take my life if you want. Whatever makes you feel better."

Anything was better than the suffocating silence she had punished him with. Being ignored by her was sheer torture.

"Let go," she said coldly.

"Starla..."

"I said, don't touch me!"

The moment his skin brushed hers, she felt a repulsive numbness wash over her. Every word she spoke was laced with ice.
