A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1086

It was as if it were simply in her nature. The moment someone hurt her, her instinct was to pull away and build an impenetrable wall.

Was this the only time Herbert had hurt her? No, it wasn't.

Back when he was allied with Yardley, they had stood together on the same side against her.

She might not have many strengths, but her memory was flawless. She remembered everything. Those memories had taken root in her mind, completely frozen in time.

She thought about them constantly, whether he was right in front of her or not. And those memories served as a constant reminder: never go soft. Never let your guard down. Because you never know when the person standing next to you will turn the blade back on you.

Hearing the absolute disgust in her voice, Herbert's chest tightened. She wasn't even trying to hide her disdain anymore.

"What will it take for you to forgive me?"

Hearing the word "forgive," Starla actually let out a sharp laugh.

Forgive him? How incredibly rich.

"We really shouldn't be discussing this right now," she stated.

"You're right. Now isn't the time."

After all, the blood had barely dried. Asking for forgiveness now was a joke. No matter how big her heart was, she couldn't possibly forgive him at this moment.

"I made that soup you like for lunch."

He knew exactly what she liked. He was far more attentive to her preferences than Fairfax had ever been. But... they were cut from the same cloth. There was no point in being moved by such trivial details.

Fairfax shot him an icy glare. "Can you shut the hell up?"

Especially when it came to Starla. Did Amos think he wasn't suffering enough? Every time the man opened his mouth, it was just to throw salt in the wound.

"I'm just speaking facts," Amos continued mercilessly. "Yardley kept Susanna Yelchin by his side for a long time. He's not entirely heartless. I really don't get what you were so panicked about back then!"

In Amos's eyes, the situation with Susanna hadn't been the crisis Fairfax made it out to be.

Fairfax glared at him.

"Yes, you saw what happened to Susanna, and you panicked. You were terrified she'd die in Yardley's hands," Amos pressed on. "But did you ever stop to think? Would Yardley actually let her die? He has a world-class medical team at his disposal! You were so busy panicking that you didn't even use your brain. You're an idiot!"

The angrier Amos got, the more unfiltered his words became.
