A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1115

Starla fell silent. Whatever Fairfax was thinking, it wasn't her problem anymore. Still, she muttered, "It's best if he's kept distracted. If he keeps digging, it's going to be a massive headache."

"Your brother is making sure he doesn't have a moment to breathe."

At the words 'your brother,' her expression darkened. Yardley was no longer a brother in her eyes.

Sighing, Herbert gently patted her head. "He is your brother. You can't change your blood."

Can't change it? The thought was a bitter pill to swallow.

"How is Mr. Hoggart?" she asked, referring to Elmer Hoggart. Disillusioned with the family, she could barely bring herself to call him her father.

Herbert hesitated. "He's in the hospital."

Starla blinked, caught completely off guard. She had barely seen Elmer when she returned to Yoran Country. He was always working, too busy to spend time with her, even if he did care.

"How bad is it?"

"It's for the best," Herbert agreed. The Hoggart family's empire was too entrenched in cutthroat politics. Starla was never built for their world. Dragging her back in would destroy her.

"He's definitely onto us," Starla warned, referring to Fairfax.

"I know."

Herbert realized he had to speed up their total vanishing act. Let Fairfax search the ocean. By the time he realized the truth, they would be ghosts.
