Susanna flinched at his sudden roar.

"She has to be alive!" Fairfax shouted. "If she's dead, why would Yardley go out of his way to completely delete her records in Marina City?!"

Susanna was momentarily speechless.

"He did it so I could never find her!" Fairfax's eyes were wild, latching onto the theory. "With her erased from the system, where am I supposed to look? Even with her information, finding her was a needle in a haystack. Now she doesn't legally exist!"

It meant she was likely living under a completely new identity. Finding her would be mathematically impossible.

"Why can't you just accept that she's gone?" Susanna cried out, unable to bear watching him spiral. If he convinced himself she was alive, he would spend the rest of his life chasing a ghost, forever trapped in this agonizing purgatory.

"Shut your mouth! This is your fault! Get out!" Anyone who told him Starla was dead was now his enemy.

"I should have never brought her to save you!" Fairfax groaned, clutching his head in agony. "Your life mattered, but hers..."

"I told you not to come! I begged you not to come!" Susanna finally broke, screaming back at him. She had been living in a personalized hell of guilt for weeks.

Silence violently crashed down on the room.

Fairfax glared at her with pure ice.

Susanna hadn't wanted to twist the knife, but she needed him to snap out of it. Pain was necessary. Even if it cut straight to the bone, he had to face reality.

"She was always the one you abandoned," Susanna said, her voice shaking but clear. "She didn't die because of me. She died because of your choices."

"I said stop saying she's dead! She isn't!"

"She is dead!" Susanna yelled back, matching his intensity. He didn't want to accept it? Too bad. He had to.
