A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1130

Just as Fairfax was drowning in his own guilt, the sheer magnitude of Susanna's words hit him.

"What did you just say?"

They weren't back in Marina City? The deal was explicitly clear: Fairfax signs the divorce papers, and Yardley immediately releases his family. The ink was dry, Starla's records were erased, yet his family was still captive?

"Yardley broke his promise," Susanna said, her face pale. "Things are really bad now."

The hostages hadn't been released. Yardley had gone back on his word.

The panic in Fairfax's chest spiked to a terrifying level. "What does he want?"

"There's been no word from him. We don't know." Susanna's voice shook. "But with Yardley, no news is usually terrible news."

People liked to say 'no news is good news', but anyone who knew Yardley Hoggart knew that silence meant a storm of unimaginable violence was coming.

Fairfax's blood ran cold.

"That bastard!" he hissed, his teeth grinding together so hard his jaw ached. He wanted to rip Yardley apart with his bare hands. He had forced Fairfax to make the ultimate sacrifice within twenty-four hours, and then spat on the deal.

...

When Amos heard the Yelchins were still in Yardley's custody, he was completely floored.

"He went back on a deal with you?"

"It's going to be a huge problem," Fairfax muttered darkly.

"What the hell do we do?" Amos ran a hand through his hair. "If we don't know his end game, we're sitting ducks."

The unknown was the deadliest threat. If Yardley was still interested in negotiating, he would have reached out. But he had already erased Starla's existence without a word. It was abundantly clear he had zero intention of letting Fairfax walk away from this.

*What do we do?*

Hearing Amos panic made Fairfax feel completely adrift. He had no idea what the next move was. Because of the recent brutal clashes with General Licht and Lazar, their resources and manpower were severely depleted.

As much as he hated to admit defeat, launching a rescue mission into Yoran Country right now was a logistical impossibility. They were powerless.

"I'm going to contact his people," Fairfax said, his eyes burning with desperate resolve. "I need to find out exactly what he wants."
