A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1132

Fairfax felt as though an invisible hand had ripped his chest open. The pain made it hard to breathe.

"If Yardley released the news, there's no doubt," Amos said. "He must have verified it through multiple channels."

Verified.

Any information that passed through Yardley's hands was accurate. That was exactly why Amos had been so thoroughly convinced of Starla's death. If she had survived, Yardley wouldn't have been so quiet. The silence was proof that she was truly gone.

Hearing Amos's reasoning, Fairfax physically slumped. His heart throbbed with a fresh, agonizing ache.

"Gone. They're all gone," he whispered.

Starla was gone, and now Herbert was gone. The two people he had hated so intensely, the ones he had desperately wanted to tear apart, were both dead. Now they were together in whatever came after this life.

Fairfax squeezed his eyes shut in pure agony.

Amos sighed. He wasn't particularly close to Herbert, but seeing Fairfax's devastation, he knew the blow was catastrophic. He quietly slipped out of the room.

Left alone with her brother, Susanna took a deep breath. Since Fairfax hadn't fully processed Starla's death, this new tragedy was piling onto an already fragile mind. Despite how much he had hated Herbert recently, the loss was profound.

"Fairfax..." Susanna began softly.

"I don't care anymore. I don't care about anything."

He didn't want to hear another word about the Yelchin family. The Yelchins! What had he lost for their sake? Everything. Every single thing he cared about was gone. This was the family he had fought so hard to protect.

First, because of Brinley Seabrook, he had lost Starla's heart. Then, because of the Yelchins, he had lost her entirely. She was no longer in this world, and neither was Herbert. He had lost it all.
