Panic set in. After a full day of radio silence from Yardley's camp, Fairfax was on the verge of breaking.
"That bastard Yardley! He's going back on his word!"
Susanna and Amos were by his side, their own nerves fraying.
"He's never been a man of his word," Amos pointed out grimly.
Fairfax rubbed his aching temples, a splitting headache compounding his intense frustration. Susanna couldn't find the words to speak. She had no idea what to say. They were completely in the dark about the Yelchin family's current situation in Yardley's hands.
And right then, a bombshell dropped.
Word came in that Herbert Farley... was dead.
Hearing the report from a subordinate, Amos and Fairfax froze. They stared at the messenger in sheer disbelief.
"What did you just say?" Amos demanded.
"Mr. Farley is gone."
"What do you mean, 'gone'?" Fairfax grit his teeth.
Herbert, dead?
Impossible. A menace like him didn't just die.
To Fairfax, Herbert was the disaster that had completely ruined his relationship with Starla. How could someone who caused so much destruction just vanish?
