A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1137

When Tanya Mercer emerged from the kitchen with red, swollen eyes, she froze the moment she saw the couple by the window.

Starla...? And Herbert?

Just moments ago, she had been in the back, scrolling through news reports confirming their deaths. She had been bawling her eyes out. She didn't care much about Herbert, but she was devastated over Starla. Her friend had wanted nothing more than to escape those bastards, and it was heartbreaking to think she had died trying.

Yet here they were, sitting right in front of her.

"Starla?" Tanya's voice cracked.

Herbert had been saying something to Starla, but they both stopped and turned at the sound of Tanya's voice. Seeing her standing by the kitchen doors, they were equally stunned.

Confirming she wasn't hallucinating, Tanya sprinted over. "Starla! It really is you!"

She practically threw herself into the booth beside Starla and pulled her into a tight embrace. Feeling the physical warmth of her friend, a massive weight lifted off her chest. "You're alive. Thank God."

From across the table, Herbert's eyes darkened. A chilling, lethal intent flashed in his gaze. He immediately viewed Tanya as a dangerous loose end.

Starla caught that murderous look instantly. She shot him a sharp, warning glare.

Their eyes locked, and Starla's gaze turned just as icy.

...

"What do you mean, 'it's fine'? In this freezing weather, you have to be extra careful!" Tanya fussed, her heart aching for her friend. "If it doesn't heal right, you'll have chronic pain for the rest of your life!"

If Starla had just lived her own life, she would have been perfectly fine. She was smart and capable. She never needed to marry Fairfax or get entangled with a wealthy family. It was Fairfax who had relentlessly dragged her down. The Yelchins had ruined her and then tried to bleed her dry. Thinking about it made Tanya sick to her stomach.

"I know, I'm taking care of it," Starla reassured her. And she was. Despite her hostility toward Herbert, she didn't neglect her own health. There was no point in punishing her own body just to spite someone else.

Tanya nodded, somewhat appeased. "But why are you with Herbert? First the news said you died, and then it said he died. What is going on?"

Starla glanced around. The restaurant was empty.
