A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1138

The staff had all congregated in the back kitchen since Tanya was out front.

"We're dead to Fairfax and Yardley," Starla explained softly. "It's permanent."

"A fake death to escape?" Tanya caught on immediately.

"Yeah. Exactly."

Tanya blinked. "But why bring Herbert? Don't tell me you..." She trailed off, not wanting to finish the thought. In her mind, if Starla went through the trouble of faking her death, she should have made a clean break from everyone. Especially Herbert. Tanya knew full well that Starla had no romantic feelings left for him.

"He's the one who executed the plan," Starla admitted.

"Oh..." Tanya realized the gravity of the situation. "That complicates things."

If Herbert had orchestrated the escape, it meant he had Starla completely cornered. If she tried to run, all he had to do was leak her location, and the whole world would know she was alive.

"Yeah, it complicates things immensely," Starla sighed.

Starla took a deep breath. "What does he have to be afraid of?"

In her eyes, Herbert feared absolutely nothing.

"He's terrifying," Tanya whispered. "He practically half-killed you just to make sure you couldn't go back to them."

That wasn't love. It was obsessive, toxic selfishness. Herbert had faked his own death just to ensure their worlds shrank down to only each other, no matter the cost to her physical safety.
