A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1188

"But you have to admit, his brand of crazy makes sense this time," Amos reasoned.

For a man like Yardley, sentiment would never be a shackle. Whatever complicated feelings he harbored for Susanna, they were never going to save her family. The Yelchins had murdered his mother.

Add Starla's recent 'death' to the mix, and it was a lethal cocktail of fresh grief and ancient hatred. Even if he worshipped the ground Susanna walked on, he would never let her family live.

"So, does this mean things are permanently over between him and Susanna?" Yvonne asked.

She wasn't exactly Susanna's biggest fan, but she couldn't help feeling a pang of pity for the girl. Being tied to a monster like Yardley guaranteed a lifetime of suffocating darkness.

"Whether it's over or not isn't up to Susanna," Amos pointed out.

They both knew exactly how domineering Yardley could be. Years ago, Amos had nearly lost his own skin just trying to get Yvonne out of his reach. Thank God they had managed to escape.

"You're not actually thinking about helping Fairfax, are you? Let me make this clear—if you get anywhere near that psycho right now, you're signing your own death warrant!"

It was the brutal truth. With Yardley spiraling this far out of control, anyone who crossed his path was just offering themselves up for slaughter.

"I wouldn't dare," Amos replied without a second of hesitation.

Even when Yardley was perfectly sane, dealing with him was a nightmare. Now that he was fully unhinged? Approaching him would be actual suicide.

Yet, Fairfax was currently gathering his forces in Cyrus Sea, secretly preparing to launch an offensive in Maxlandia.

"Good," Yvonne said, relieved. She had been genuinely terrified that Amos's simplistic sense of loyalty might push him to do something incredibly stupid.

They were awful people. And as a product of that environment, how could Fairfax be any different? What kind of decency could you expect from a family like that?

Amos scratched the back of his head, choosing not to argue. Yvonne always had a sharp tongue, and her observations were usually dead-on. He was used to it by now.

"Fairfax is probably going to call you. Whatever he says, you are staying out of it," Yvonne demanded, her tone leaving no room for debate.

Amos nodded frantically. "I know, I know. You know me—when it comes to Yardley's mess, my policy has always been to run in the opposite direction!"

It was true in the past, true now, and would remain true forever. He had finally given Yvonne a few years of peace. Throwing himself into Yardley's crosshairs would destroy the life they had built.

The man was a certified lunatic.
