Just as Yvonne predicted, Fairfax reached out.
First thing the next morning, Amos received his call.
"My entire family is gone," Fairfax's voice was hollow.
Amos's eye twitched violently. *Bro, I know it's a tragedy, but you really shouldn't be telling me this. I can't help you.*
Whenever Amos couldn't offer a solution, he resorted to silence. Just like now. Offering empty comfort felt insulting.
Seeing that Amos wasn't going to respond, Fairfax cut straight to the point. "Amos, can you help me just this once?"
Amos inhaled sharply. *Are we really doing this?*
He didn't even ask what kind of help Fairfax needed. "I can't help you," he replied flatly, his rejection swift and absolute.
He couldn't be blamed for being so blunt. Having grown up with Yardley, no one understood better than Amos exactly what kind of monster Elmer had forged. Yardley knew the Yelchins had murdered his mother. At this point, stepping into his line of sight was begging for a bullet.
Fairfax was asking for a favor "just this once." And it would literally be the *last* once. If Amos agreed, there wouldn't be a next time, because neither of them would survive the beast's wrath.
"You—" Fairfax choked, clearly caught off guard by the immediate rejection. He hadn't expected Amos to shut him down without a second of hesitation.
"I know you hate him," Amos said softly, "but at the end of the day, your family started this."
It was his mother's life. Knowing Yardley, merely wiping out the living Yelchins was a mercy. It was a miracle he hadn't dug up their ancestors' graves too.
