A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 1238

But the longer they stayed together, the more Starla realized Romy wasn't making any moves. She was just... there.

So why was she risking her neck to help?

"You really don't remember me, do you?" Romy asked quietly.

Starla frowned in the dark. "Remember you from where?"

Had their paths crossed before all this?

"I was on a job in Marina City a few years back," Romy explained. "It went sideways. I was bleeding out under an overpass."

"An overpass?"

"Yeah. You thought I was homeless."

Starla blinked. Homeless?

"You tossed me a paper bag full of pastries from a bakery."

The memory hit Starla like a flash of lightning. Yes. She remembered walking past a bridge one evening and seeing someone huddled in the shadows, looking completely destitute. She had bought a bag of food from a nearby bakery and left it for them.

"I hadn't eaten in two days. I was too injured to move, let alone find food," Romy said, her voice dropping.

Starla was stunned. "I didn't realize you were hurt."

"I know. But that bag of food saved my life."

So that was it. Gratitude.

Romy wasn't lying when she said she was here for him. She just wanted his head on a platter.

"He deserves to die," Romy spat, the venom in her voice making the hair on Starla's arms stand up.

It was terrifying how small the world really was.

"But not yet," Romy added, forcing her anger down.

Starla looked at her in the dark.

"Right now, he's making himself useful by keeping Fairfax off your back. As long as he's protecting you, he gets to breathe."

But if Herbert ever tried to hurt Starla again? Romy would make sure he never left Smaro Town alive.
