Starla had never expected to have such a profound connection to Romy.
"When did you figure out it was me?" Starla asked softly.
"Not that long ago, honestly. I didn't recognize you at first. If I had, I would've smuggled you out of Sylvan Vale from day one. I never would have let those bastards lay another hand on you."
Starla offered a weak, bitter smile.
"Do you trust me now?" Romy asked.
"Yes."
It was a lie. Starla couldn't bring herself to fully trust anyone anymore.
Romy's backstory made sense, but Starla's capacity for faith had been entirely destroyed. She had been burned too many times. Every promise of safety usually ended in a trap.

Seeing the heavy, dark look in Starla's eyes, Romy sighed. "The Yelchins falling apart? That's not on you."
Starla stayed quiet.
"The root of their downfall was Fairfax himself. He left the door wide open for outside players to tear his life apart."
