Just before his fingers grazed hers, he froze.
She looked at him in silence, her dark eyes unreadable.
"Sorry. Force of habit," he murmured.
He stiffly pulled his hand back.
She kept her gaze on him, still quiet.
No one could tell what was going through her mind, but at the very least, she didn't look at him with the usual disgust and aversion.
He noticed the subtle shift.
"Rudolf booked a place that serves your favorites. Let's go check it out."
"Okay."
A smile touched his lips.
The warm sunlight streamed through the car window, painting a picture-perfect moment of the two of them sitting side by side.

He carefully placed portions of her favorite dishes onto her small plate.
"Thank you."

His smile never wavered.

Her phone rang. It was Yardley. She didn't answer.
She simply flipped the phone face down.
Elmer had told her she didn't have to acknowledge him if she didn't want to!
Since she had permission to ignore him, letting his call ring out was only natural...!
Watching her little gesture, he chuckled. "It seems Susanna got pretty roughed up this time."
Anyone who barely survived an attack was bound to be in bad shape.
Otherwise, Yardley and Fairfax wouldn't be so frantic.
