After a hot shower, Starla finally felt human again.
The moment she stepped out of the bathroom, a maid approached with a tray of fresh fruit and a glass of milk. "Miss."
"Put it down and get out," Starla ordered.
The maid paused, taken aback by her sharp tone, but quickly set the tray down. Bowing her head, she murmured, "Mr. Hoggart wishes to see you."
"Tell him no."
The maid was speechless. Starla was absolutely ruthless now.
Before coming back, her father had promised to prepare a separate guest house on the estate just for her. The Hoggart Castle was massive. As long as she didn't want to cross paths with Yardley, she could easily go a whole year without seeing him.
Honestly, she hadn't planned on staying here at all. But Elmer's arrangements, coupled with the raw pain and regret in his eyes when he looked at her, made it impossible to refuse. Her father's grief had anchored her, at least for now.
As for Yardley, Elmer had made it clear: she could see her brother if she wanted to, and ignore him if she didn't. And right now, she was more than happy to pretend she didn't even have a brother.

On the other side of the castle, Yardley's expression darkened the moment he heard Starla had refused him.
