Because of the close range, a few drops of Yardley's blood had splattered onto Starla's cheek. She calmly reached up and wiped the warm crimson away, leaving only the metallic scent of copper.
*Thud.* She dropped the gun onto the driveway.
Her movements were terrifyingly composed. This was the same woman who had once loathed the very idea of learning to shoot. Everyone knew that in moments of extreme violence, the calmer the shooter, the more dangerous they were.
Yardley stared at her, completely stunned. He straightened up, clutching his bleeding arm, a dark sneer twisting his face. "Look at you. You actually shot me."
"How could you disgust me like this?" Starla asked, her voice empty.
Yardley paused. "Disgust you?"
"Do you have any idea how much I despise the Yelchins?" she said, closing her eyes briefly.
Back in Marina City, when the war with the Yelchins was at its peak, Yardley had stood by her. She thought he had her back.
"You think I'm disgusting?"
"Aren't you? You know exactly what Fairfax means to me."
Starla's gaze hardened into absolute ice. "You can be in love with Susanna. You can protect him for her sake. But how dare you demand that I protect him in front of our father?"
*Keep Fairfax safe.* That was what he had wanted her to do.
