Herbert sat frozen, his blood running cold as the dial tone echoed in his ear. He didn't move for a long, agonizing time. His entire body felt numb.
Standing behind him, Rudolf remained silent. Neither of them had expected Starla's reaction to be this explosive. Not only had Herbert failed to get any information on Susanna and Fairfax, but he had also completely destroyed whatever fragile truce he had built with her.
All the progress he thought he had made was wiped out by a single phone call.
And Herbert knew that if he left Maxlandia tonight, he would probably never see her again.
"Just because of one call, she hates me this much," Herbert muttered, a bitter sense of helplessness washing over him. But regret was useless now.
"You know she despises the Yelchins, sir," Rudolf said quietly.
Herbert fell silent. He lit a cigarette and took a deep drag. During his time in Smaro Town, he had practically quit smoking to accommodate Starla's health. He had only allowed himself the occasional cigarette when she wasn't around. But since returning to Marina City, his addiction had come back worse than ever.
"It's a fight to the death between her and Fairfax now," Rudolf noted.
Herbert's heart clenched. It had always been that way, hadn't it? Even back in Marina City. He had known the stakes, yet he had still pushed her away for a handful of mines.
"Pack our things," Herbert said, closing his eyes.
