A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 839

Hearing this, Starla's face went completely blank.

A time limit... a stalling tactic.

"Can you just get straight to the point?" she demanded. Amidst all the chaos, she didn't have the mental bandwidth to play guessing games. She just needed to know the secret Herbert was keeping from her.

Fairfax had lied to her in the past. Was Herbert lying to her now, too?

"Herbert had a true love back in college," Fairfax said slowly. "I'm guessing you didn't know about her."

A true love.

No, she had absolutely no idea. Her eyes iced over.

Catching her reaction, Fairfax sneered. "Did you think you were the only woman who ever mattered to him? Please."

His voice dripped with mockery. "It was love at first sight in college. Unfortunately for him, she died."

*Died.*

"What does that have to do with Brinley?" Starla asked. She didn't care about Herbert's romantic history. When a person reaches a certain threshold of betrayal, their heart simply shuts down. She was already there.

"You look a bit like her," Fairfax remarked.

"I don't care! Tell me how Brinley fits into this!" Starla gritted her teeth. "First you, now Herbert. You both throw yourselves on the sword for that psychotic bitch!"

She was sick of Fairfax's theatrical stalling. She just wanted the punchline so she could drive away.

"Brinley is that dead woman's half-sister," Fairfax dropped the bomb. "The reason Herbert is shielding Brinley is because the father stepped in."

"Oh, come on," Fairfax scoffed. "Now that you know the truth, do you really think that timeline means anything?"

Starla's heart sank like a stone.

"She's just a half-sister..." she murmured.

"When that woman died, she made Herbert promise to take care of her family," Fairfax explained. "You know Zenith Corp, right? Herbert's been feeding them top-tier contracts for years."

Zenith Corp. Yes. One of Farley Group's most entrenched partners.

Starla's composure completely fractured.

"If it weren't for that woman's father, why do you think Herbert would align himself with a small-time operation like Zenith Corp?" Fairfax continued. "He treats the old man like a father-in-law. Now that the old man is begging for Brinley's life, do you honestly think Herbert is ever going to hand her over to you?"
