A Widow's Poison, A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 840

If a man he treated like a father-in-law was begging for Brinley's life, then no. Herbert was never going to give her up.

"Why should I believe a word you say?" Starla challenged.

If Garret had brought her this intel, she wouldn't bat an eye. But coming from Fairfax? She trusted him about as far as she could throw him. The only reason she wasn't dismissing him entirely was because Herbert's behavior had already raised massive red flags.

"I would never hurt you," Fairfax said earnestly.

Starla let out a sharp, incredulous laugh.

*Never hurt her.*

He had forced her into a marriage that nearly destroyed her. She had barely survived him.

"You've got that highly capable guy working for you, right? Garret?" Fairfax offered smoothly. "Have him look into it. He'll confirm everything I just told you."

Fairfax actually respected Garret. During their war in Marina City, Garret had orchestrated so many counterattacks that the Yelchin family had barely been able to breathe.

Starla's brow furrowed tightly.

As she reached for the ignition, Fairfax flashed his signature reckless smirk. "Not even going to give me a hug before you go?"

Starla rolled her eyes in sheer disgust. "Don't think you've won just because you drove a wedge between me and Herbert. As far as I'm concerned, the two of you are exactly the same."

So what if she and Herbert were done? It didn't elevate Fairfax's status in her eyes.

She was cutting Herbert off because he chose Brinley over her. She had cut Fairfax off for the exact same reason.

Starla had lost whatever microscopic sliver of patience she had left. She shifted the car into gear.

"Watch your back, Starla," Fairfax called out over the engine. "With Herbert, and with the Hoggart family."

Fairfax hadn't been able to dig up the Hoggart family's deepest secrets yet, but he knew Herbert's presence in Yoran Country was highly calculated.

It made him question Herbert's initial motives in Marina City.

Had Herbert really approached Starla just to repay her for saving his life?

Gratitude was one thing. But Fairfax knew better than anyone that in their world, ambition always eclipsed gratitude.
