Herbert took another drag of his cigarette, his voice dropping to a freezing register. "Abort the plan for now."

Starla had already pieced everything together. How could he possibly fake Brinley's death at this point? The original idea had been to relocate her to a place where no one knew her. But now, seeing Starla's unyielding resolve to drag the woman straight to hell, Herbert felt a flash of irritation.

"Understood," Rudolf replied, unsure of what else to say. "Is it possible she reacted so aggressively because Brinley reached out to her after moving into Celestial Bay?"

It had to be. Knowing Brinley, who was so used to acting superior around Starla, being utterly crushed by her recently must have been agonizing. Once she finally got a moment to breathe, of course she would jump at the chance to gloat. Anyone in Starla's position would have snapped. No wonder she was so volatile about him helping the woman.

Herbert pinched the bridge of his nose, a headache pounding behind his eyes. "Call Brinley. Tell her if she wants to stay alive, she needs to stop provoking Starla."

"Yes, sir."

Back in the castle, Starla stared at her screen before answering.

"Didn't expect this, did you?" Brinley's smug voice drifted through the speaker. "Even the heavens are on my side. So what if Herbert loves you?"
