Chapter 104
After Hebert’s speech, which was nothing short of thunder shaking the room, I easily secured full control over the massive Southern Aid Project. Those arrogant Alphas, even though clearly unwilling, had no choice but to sign the joint agreement under the sheer dominance of the Bloodmoon Pack’s power.
This should’ve been an incredibly glorious victory, and holding that weighty authorization document in my hands did fill me with a kind of joy I’d never experienced before. It wasn’t the fleeting happiness from playing or shopping–it was the genuine thrill of gaining recognition and authority, of finally being seen as someone who mattered.
But along with the excitement came a constant undercurrent of unease. I’d never done anything like this before. It felt like being a baby taking its first steps, only to be thrown right to the edge of a treacherous cliff in the Alps. Could I really handle this? If I messed up, it wouldn’t just shatter the hard–earned dignity I’d barely managed to build—it would also make Hebert the laughingstock of the entire werewolf world. “Look at me, Ashley.” In the car back to the manor, Hebert’s deep eyes locked onto mine his broad hand firmly wrapping around my cold fingertips. “You have a sharper mind than any of them. Don’t let stupid prejudices hold you back. Go for it–no matter what happens, I’ll be here to back you up.”
His words hit me like a shot of pure adrenaline, instantly chasing away all the doubts weighing me down. Over the following week, I threw myself completely into the endless piles of data reports, terrain surveys, and budget plans, calculating every cent down to the smallest detail. On top of that, the Omega charity banquet I had already planned was progressing smoothly under my watch. Juggling both tasks left me utterly exhausted, with barely four hours of sleep every night. But somehow, the sense of purpose inside me was electrifying.
It was late into the night, the clock hands already cruelly creeping past 2 a.m.
I rubbed my sore neck, staring at the freshly finished draft proposal in front of me, the last punctuation mark just locked in. Letting out a long exhale, pride surged through me–though faintly shadowed by the tiniest hesitation. The funds involved in this plan were astronomical, and I needed someone with unshakable judgment to review it.
I needed Hebert.
I stood up, grabbed the thick stack of documents, and walked out of my room. The hallway was so quiet that the sound of my own heartbeat seemed deafening. When I reached Hebert’s study, I noticed the heavy mahogany double doors were slightly ajar. A faint, dim yellow light spilled out through the gap.
Was he still working?
Without hesitation, I pushed the door open.
The moment the door swung wide, an overwhelmingly intense cedar scent hit me like a violent tornado, instantly engulfing me! It was hotter, sharper than ever before, tinged with an almost suffocating sweetness and a metallic, blood–like tang. My legs gave out, and I nearly collapsed onto the plush Persian carpet beneath me.
Something was definitely wrong. The air felt dense with a dangerous, suffocating pressure that could break anyone’s sanity.
The study was empty. Papers were scattered across the large ebony desk. The powerful scent was coming from the private lounge adjacent to the study.
I swallowed hard, trying to suppress the trembling instinct roiling in my chest, and carefully crept towards the lounge. The door was half–open, and no lights were on inside. Only the cold, pale moonlight from the window illuminated a sliver of the room.
“Get… out…”
