Chapter 51
“What do you want me to do? His voice was hoarse, low, laced with frustration and humiliation. “Just tell me, what will it take for you to stay?”
That sentence was like a burning bullet, piercing straight through my chest. For a split second, I saw the Brian from three years ago-the proud, towering Alpha who had pulled me out of the hellhole in Brooklyn.
Now, he looked like a total wreck. Those blue eyes of his swirled with a chaos I’d never seen before, and maybe… a hint of pleading. He reminded me of a lone wolf, lost and wounded in a forest fire-battered all over but still stubbornly standing upright, growling one last desperate sound with whatever pride he had left.
That mangled, shattered heart of mine couldn’t help but ache for a moment.
I had loved him so much.
I used to think I knew him better than anyone else in this world. Just the slightest furrow of his brow could keep me awake all night, heart aching. I’d quietly brew chamomile tea to help him sleep, leave it in his study, and then turn around to handle all those tedious pack affairs he had no time for. I took care of everything-from the pack’s finances to organizing the guards on every full moon-so he could focus solely on the battles and business of being an Alpha.
He rarely hugged me, let alone said “thank you.” But I kept convincing myself—Brian was an Alpha carrying the weight of the entire pack. He wasn’t some romantic lead out of a Hollywood movie. He didn’t need to be attentive to me.
My love? It’s just been a one-sided show, a pathetic self-delusion.
Until a month ago, when Silvia came back.
That woman, like some ghost from the past, smashed all the illusions I’d spent three years building. Brian wasn’t distant because it was just his nature. His restraint, his indifference-they were simply because he didn’t love me.
Oh, except when it came to the bedroom.
What we had there was raw, unhinged, and wild—a primal display of possession. He’d leave his marks on me, staking his claim like the Alpha he was. And I-foolish me-tried to twist that animalistic need into some kind of love. God, women and our insane ability to romanticize. Love is the most dangerous kind of drug, isn’t it?
Any tiny shred of pity I had left for him vanished the moment I truly saw. In his eyes, buried deep, there was only the Alpha’s consuming, undeniable need to own. Nothing more. Nothing less.”
No.” I heard my own voice, steady and sharp, like a stone striking ice.
Brian’s expression froze. The desperate facade he had put on shattered in an instant, replaced by a mix of shock and rage simmering just beneath the surface.
“No?” He echoed the word, as if it was something foreign to his ears.
Bang!
His fist slammed down on the mahogany desk in front of me-my desk, the one I had carefully picked out myself. The wood let out a groan under the impact, and the vase tumbled over, smashing onto the floor. Deep purple petals scattered among the shards of glass, the scene almost grotesquely beautiful, like a staged tragedy.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” His voice erupted, raw and furious, the Alpha pressure radiating off him in waves like a storm crashing down. “Is it because of that damn Hebert?! Are you that eager to betray me, to betray our bond, and become sonie other Alpha’s mistress?!” “Betrayal?” I let out a laugh, sharp and icy, even to my own ears. “Brian, do you seriously have the nerve to bring up ‘betrayal’ with me? You brought another woman into our home, into our bedroom! You let her wear my robe, sleep in my bed! You tossed me-your Luna-aside like trash in front of the whole pack! And now, you dare accuse me of betrayal?”

“I didn’t betray you!” he roared, his eyes blazing red with fury. “Silvia… she’s different!”
“Oh, is that so?” I stepped closer, channeling every ounce of hurt and bitterness into my glare, stabbing him with my words. ” Fine, Alpha. Then go to our bedroom right now and throw that ‘different,’ fragile little woman off my bed. Kick her out of Blackwood Pack’s territory! Can you do that, Brian? Just do it, and I’ll stay!”
He went silent.
The fury on his face froze as something darker, colder took its place. Then, he laughed-a cruel, venomous laugh I had never seen from him before.
“So, this is what you’ve been aiming for all along.” His voice was quiet, but it cut deeper than any shout ever could, every word slicing into my heart like a poisoned blade. “Well, congratulations, Ashley. I’m glad so glad that I never loved you, not even
once.”
“Otherwise,” his lips curled into an even sharper sneer, “falling in love with someone as cold-blooded, selfish, and heartless as you? I’d rather die out of sheer shame.”
Smack!
I threw every ounce of strength I had into the slap, landing it squarely across his handsome but sickeningly loathsome face.
The entire world seemed to freeze for a moment.
