Chapter 67

Ashley’s POV

Knock, knock, knock.

The sound of knocking hit me like a thunderclap, a jarring explosion in my head. My body froze, the blood in my veins instantly turning to ice. Brian’s face loomed just inches away, his lips closing in, making my stomach churn with disgust. I threw my hand up and shoved him away with every ounce of strength in me.

“Hebert!”

His name split through my muddled thoughts like a streak of lightning. What was he doing here? Did he see-? Hot shame swept over me like a tidal wave, drowning me. My cheeks flared, so fiery it felt like they might melt.

My heart pounded wildly, slamming against my ribs like it was about to escape. Did I betray him? Did I really just think that? With Brian’s child growing inside me, how could I even begin to feel something for another Alpha? Was I that empty, that easily swayed? No, no way. This isn’t who I am. It has to be Brian- everything he’s done to me-it’s broken me, twisted me into someone I don’t even recognize. He ruined

Hebert stood by the door, his cold gaze sweeping over Brian before landing on me. His face betrayed no emotion, calm and unreadable like a deep, still lake. Yet, in those dark eyes of his, there was a suffocating pressure that was impossible to ignore.

He didn’t say anything, just stood there quietly, waiting.

“Alpha Brian was just here to check on me, to ask about some matters regarding the Blackwood Pack,” I said instinctively, my voice carrying a slight, uncontrollable tremor.

Brian’s expression soured instantly, his jaw clenching so tightly it looked like it might crack. His eyes turned to Hebert, filled with a mix of defiance and hostility.

Hebert’s gaze shifted back to Brian, and when he spoke, his voice was low and steady, each word landing with undeniable weight. “Brian, don’t take me for a fool. I know the difference between a pearl and a stone. Ashley is a respected guest of the Bloodmoon Pack, and no one has the right to mistreat her. That’s the bare minimum of decency-and my line as an Alpha.”

The words were a direct reprimand, and Brian’s face darkened immediately, his eyes glinting with danger. He took a step forward, and the power of his Blackwood Alpha aura erupted in an instant, clashing head-on with Hebert’s presence. The air around them seemed to hum with the silent, intense collision of their dominance. “She’s my mate,” Brian said, his voice low and laced with threat. His eyes locked on me with a possessiveness that made my skin crawl. “She still carries my mark. I’ve agreed to let her stay here for six months-that’s as far as I’m willing to go.”

My heart sank. His words cut like a sharp blade, slicing deep into my chest. My mate. What a cruel joke.

Hebert’s lips curled into a cold smirk, a hint of ridicule flashing in his eyes “I respect Ashley’s choices I’d never force her into something she doesn’t want. That’s what makes me different from you”

Brian’s jaw clenched tightly, and the air seemed to buzz with tension, like static before a storm. The energy between the two Alphas filled the narrow hallway, suffocating and oppressive I felt trapped, like! was caught between two volcanoes on the verge of erupting, ready to tear me apart.

At last, Brian let out a humorless laugh, though the sharpness in his gaze didn’t waver as he looked at Hebert. The weight of his aura eased slightly but didn’t disappear.
