Chapter 79

Ashley’s POV

I walked over to the reading corner in the orphanage and picked up a brightly colored picture book. Its pages were filled with cute animals and simple drawings-the kind of content the kids could easily follow. I lowered myself onto the floor on the other side of the group.

“Hey, kids,” I said softly, a smile warming my voice.

A few of them turned toward me. I opened the book and began reading in a relaxed, natural tone.

“Once upon a time, there was a little bunny who absolutely loved carrots.”

I pointed at the illustrations, adding lively gestures to match the story.

The kids were hooked instantly. Their eyes brightened, no longer heavy with yawns or drifting toward everything else in the room. Slowly but surely, they shuffled closer, forming a cozy little circle around me–completely absorbed in the tale.

Cecilia’s voice still filled the room, but her audience had almost entirely disappeared. Her voice gradually faded until it stopped altogether. She lifted her head, only to see the children completely engrossed in the story I was telling, gathered tightly around me. Her face flushed a deep, angry red, all traces of her carefully maintained composure gone. Her fingers clutched the heavy poetry book so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

She suddenly stood up, striding toward me with sharp, determined steps.

“Ashley!” Her voice was trembling with barely contained rage, almost a shout.

“Did you do this on purpose?! Did you deliberately try to make me look bad?!”

Cecilia’s POV

“Ashley!” My voice practically exploded out of me, the anger burning my throat.

“Did you do this on purpose?! Did you deliberately try to make me look bad?!”

My chest heaved as if it might burst, my whole body trembling with suppressed rage. I couldn’t let myself lose control-not here, not in front of the media and everyone else watching.

I grabbed her arm roughly, dragging her out of sight of those curious gazes. My nails nearly dug into her skin as I squeezed hard.

“You’d better stay out of my way,” I hissed, my voice low but sharp, every word edged with icy venom.

“You’re not welcome here.”

My eyes swept over her sharply, a warning clear in my glare. But she just stood there, meeting my gaze with an unnerving calmness. That look on her face–it only fueled my frustration.

And there he was in my mind. Hebert. His indifferent expression flashed before me, followed closely by the memory of how impatient he’d been with me lately. That frustration of his–it sat like a weight on my chest, suffocating me.

I have to do something. I can’t just let him push me aside.

This orphanage he mentioned it once, casually. It holds some part of his childhood memories, which makes this place special to him.

If I can show my best self here, he’ll notice me He’ll realize that I’m the one who deserves to stand by his side. Not that Ashley popping up out of nowhere a nobody, an OMEGA without even a pack

She doesn’t understand Hebert, and she definitely doesn’t understand this place What, she thinks slapping on some fancy title makes her belong here? So naive, it’s almost laughable.

I turned my gaze back to the kids. Their small faces were filled with curiosity, glancing between us.

My mind started racing. These kids-they’re my ticket.

I reached into my handbag and pulled out a few neatly wrapped candies and some shiny trinkets I’d brought specifically for this.

Walking up to the nearest little girl, I crouched down slightly, putting on my practiced, warmest smile.

“Hey, sweetie.” I said softly, slipping a candy into her small hand.

“Want to hear a little secret from me?”

The little girl’s eyes lit up for a moment as she nodded.

I leaned in close to her, practically whispering.

“Later, make sure you say I’m the kindest and prettiest, alright?” My voice had hint of persuasion in it.

“And don’t pay attention to that other lady. She’s no fun at all.”

I gave her a gentle pat on the head before walking over to another child, doing the exact same thing-same whispers, same gestures. Piece by piece, little candies and small trinkets were quietly slipped into their hands.

I studied their reactions, watching them accept the gifts with smiles of contentment spreading across their faces.

A smug sense of satisfaction grew inside me. These kids, they’re so easy to win over.

Soon, they’ll realize who truly deserves their admiration.

My plan was working like a charm. I caught a few kids sneaking shy smiles at me now.

Their focus was shifting. No longer were their eyes on Ashley-they were starting to look my way instead.

A wave of triumph surged inside me. Everything was going just as I had planned.
