Nero moved like he wasn’t bleeding everywhere. Like he wasn’t aked and injured and barely conscious five seconds ago.
Manuel stepped back but Nero was faster. His hand closed around Manuel’s throat and I saw it, the alpha in him, the thing that made other wolves bow even when he was weak..
“Nero, stop!” I grabbed his arm and the second I touched him he went completely still.
Then he turned to look at me and his eyes were burning.
“You let him touch you.”
It wasn’t a question.
“I was dying,” I said. “The bond sickness, I couldn’t walk and he carried me back and that’s it.”
“He put his hands on you.” His grip tightened on Manuel’s throat. “On what’s mine.”
My wolf was practically purring. She liked this, the jealousy, the possessiveness, all of it.
“Let him go,” I said. “You’re losing a lot of blood from that huge gash on your thigh.”
He looked down like he’d forgotten he was injured. Blood was running down his leg, pooling on the ground.
“What do you mean I was right about the thicker pants?” he asked.

I blinked. “What?”
“Never mind.” He let go of Manuel who stumbled back, coughing
Nero swayed and I caught him. He was burning up, fever hot.
“Strip,” Nero said to Manuel.
“Excuse me?”
“Your pants. Give them to me.” Nero’s voice was flat. Commanding. “Obey your alpha.”
Manuel’s face went dark. “I’m not your-”
“You can have mine, Alpha.”
Mitch stepped forward from the trees. He wasn’t looking at Nere just staring at the ground, his hands doing that tapping thing against his thighs.
“I have extras,” Mitch said quietly.
“Why do you have extras?” I asked before I could stop myself.
“Different fabrics. Different days.” He started unbuttoning his shirt. Methodical. Precise. “Today’s cotton. Tomorrow’s linen. These are softer. Your wound, it’ll hurt less.”
He held out the pants. Still wouldn’t meet Nero’s eyes.

Nero took them. “Thank you.”
Mitch nodded once and stepped back exactly three feet. Turned around while Nero got dressed.
I wanted to hug him. This weird, wonderful wolf who carried ex a pants and noticed things nobody else did.
“The sleepwalking curse only works at night, right?” I asked, trying to distract myself from watching Nero pull on pants while bleeding.
Manuel answered. “The sleepwalking curse bestowed on the Blackwater family works whenever the alpha sleeps. And by the look of that injury, it’s also said that alpha injuries heal slower if btained during the curse period. That’s why he’s still losing blood.”
“I was drugged,” Nero said. He’d gotten the pants on and was leaning against a tree. “Someone gave me sleep medicine. Someone wanted this to happen.”
“So I’m not the only one being attacked at your evil palace,” I said. “You have a lot of work to do when we get back.”
“If we get back,” Manuel muttered.
“Help me move him,” I said to Manuel. “We need to stop the bleeding.”
“Why are you helping him?” Manuel was staring at me like I was crazy. “He told the council you were the mad bride. He lied about you.”
I turned to him. “If we leave him here to bleed out and he dies, we’ll both be killed for treason. Our scents and tracks are all over this place. The next thing to do is help me.”
Even if he doesn’t deserve it, my wolf added in my head. Though he does deserve our pussy. You should be grateful he gave us our strength back.
“Shut up, Parrot,” I muttered.
“What?” Manuel looked confused.
“Nothing. Are you going to help me or not?”
Manuel called to Mitch. “How long do we have?”
Mitch was counting on his fingers. “We need to hurry. Nightfall soon.”
I went to Nero and knelt beside him. Pulled at my dress fabric. If ripped.
“Careful, little wolf,” Nero said. “Keep tearing your clothes off and I’ll forget I’m injured.”
“You’re bleeding and still making jokes?”
“Who said I was joking?”
I pressed the cloth against his thigh. Hard. He groaned.
“Maybe I like hurting you,” I said, tying it tight. “After you called he mad.”
His hand grabbed my chin. “I lied to protect you. They would’ve killed you. Better crazy than dead.”
When Manuel tried to help, Nero snarled. “Touch me and I’ll tear your limbs off.”
