I could hear every sound now. Branches creaking. Wind through leaves. My own heartbeat.

Nero’s breathing was labored. Uneven. The injury was worse than he was letting on.

“Who knew the mad bride would save me,” he said quietly. “If Kade and Abel could see this.”

I wrapped my arms around myself. Shivering harder now. “Why did you say I was mad? Do you believe I was innocent?”

“I’ve always known you were innocent. You don’t have the brains for that level of planning.”

Still couldn’t tell if that was an insult.

Nero started gathering wood for a fire. Moving slow. Favoring his leg.

“Let me do that,” I said. “You’re injured,”

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not fine. You’re bleeding and burning up and we’re stuck but here until morning.”

He didn’t argue. Just watched me build the fire with what he’d gathered.

When I got it lit, the warmth barely touched the cold settling into my bones.

I sat across from him, hugging my knees. Shaking.

“Hope you won’t sleep tonight,” I said. “I mean, you already slept earlier. Maybe the curse won’t come.”

His laugh was bitter. “I don’t have a choice. The curse comes at midnight whether I’ve slept or not. It forces me to sleep. Then I wake up as something else.”

“You can’t control it at all?”

“No.” He stared into the flames. “Every night at twelve, it takes me. I can’t fight it. Can’t stop it.“”

The firelight made his face look harder. Sharper. The shadows under his eyes deeper.

His leg was still bleeding. Slower now, but steady. The bandage was soaked through.

We were alone. Completely alone. And at midnight, he’d turn in a monster.

I shivered again. This time not just from cold.

The temperature dropped. I was freezing in this thin dress.

Nero was fever hot, shivering.

“Come here,” he said across the flames.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re shaking and I’m burning up. We help each other. Body hat.”

My wolf howled yes. My brain screamed danger.

“I’ve seen you naked before,” he said. “This is survival.”

“That was different.”

“I’m still strong enough to hold you down if you try to run.” He smiled sharp.

That should not have been hot.

“Fine.” I unlaced my dress with shaking fingers.

His eyes tracked everything.

“Slowly,” he said. “We have time.”

The dress fell.

His breathing changed. Rough.

“Come here.”

I walked to him slowly.

“You’re enjoying this,” I said.

“Very much. Seeing you choose to come to me even though you hate me.”

“I should hate you.”

“But you don’t.” He pulled me down. “Your wolf won’t let you.”

I straddled his lap, careful of his thigh. His skin burned against mine.

“Just for warmth,” I said.

“Of course.” His hands settled on my waist. “Just survival.”

His thumb traced my hip. “Why is your heart racing?”

“Fever.”

“Liar”

He smelled like blood and pine. Like danger and home.

“You’re shaking,” he said against my neck.

“It’s cold.”

“Liar.” His teeth grazed my pulse, “You want me.”

I did.

His hand slid into my hair. Gripped tight.

“Say it. Say you want me even after everything.”

“I hate you.”

“That’s not what I asked.” He pulled my head back. Exposed my throat, “Say it, Remi.”

His other hand moved between my legs.

“Fuck,” he breathed. “You’re soaked.

“It’s the bond.”

“It’s us.” His fingers circled. “Your body knows what you won’t admit.”

I couldn’t think. Couldn’t breathe.

Then he kissed me.

And I stopped thinking entirely.

His mouth was hot. Demanding. Taking everything I had.

I kissed him back just as hard. Angry and wanting and desperate all at once.

“That’s it,” he said against my lips. “Let me hear you.”

I was trying to be quiet but he wasn’t letting me.

“Maybe I don’t want gentle.”

He flipped us. Suddenly I was on my back on the ground and he was above me, injured leg and all.

“You sure about this?” he asked. His hand was still between my les. Still moving.

“Yes,” I breathed.

“Say it properly.” His fingers pressed inside me. One. Then two, say you want me.”

“I want you,” I gasped. “Even though you’re an asshole. Even though you lied. I want you.”

“Good girl.”

He kissed me again. Deep and claiming while his fingers moved inside me.
