Four legs should be easier than two but they weren’t. My front left kept crossing over my right. I stumbled. Fell. Got up. Fell again.
“This is humiliating,” I said. It came out as a whine.
“You’re doing great,” Parrot said. “For a newborn baby deer.”
“Not helping.”
“I’m never helping. That’s not my job.”
Nero was standing a few feet away. Human form. Naked. Watching the tree line.
Before I could answer, they came pouring out of the trees like a flood. Ten. Twenty.
These creatures were bigger. Wrong. Like someone took wolves and broke them. Rebuilt them into something worse.
Their claws were too long. Their teeth too sharp. Their eyes too intelligent.
“Oh fuck,” Parrot said. “We’re gonna die.”
“Last chance to walk away,” he said.
The leader stepped forward. Bigger than the others. Scarred across its face.
“We don’t want to fight you, Dark Alpha. Just give us the girl.”
“No.”
“She’s meaningless to you.”
Nero laughed. “Meaningless? She’s my wife. My mate. And considering what she can do with her mouth, I’d say she’s pretty fucking valuable.”
I would’ve been embarrassed if I wasn’t terrified.
Nero shifted. Black wolf. Huge. The biggest I’d ever seen.
Was he joking right now?
“This isn’t a game, Nero Blackwater.”
“Everything’s a game if you’re funny enough.” Nero’s voice droped. “What do you want with her?”
“We’re giving you a chance here. Focus on pack politics. Don’t so the waters. Don’t be foolish like your father.”
Nero went completely still. “My father.”
“He’s six feet deep because he didn’t listen to warnings. Don’t make the same mistake.”
“People always said I looked more like my dad.” Nero’s voice was leadly calm. “Which means I’m just as stubborn. And just as hard to kill.”

I was still struggling with my legs. Parrot was shouting instructions in my head.
“Left front first. No wait, right front. Actually just fall over and ply dead. That works for possums.”
“We’re not a possum!”
The creatures started circling. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six times around.
The leader stayed back. Sent two forward.
They rushed at me.
Nero intercepted caught the first one mid–leap and tore its throat out.
The second one he grabbed by the leg swung it into a tree. Bone cracked.
“Four more,” the leader said. Calm. “Attack him at once. Get the girl while he’s busy.”
The four rushed Nero.
He fought like something possessed.
I tried to help and un toward them. Mylegs tangled. I went down hard.
“I told you left front first,” Parrot said.
“Shut up and help me!”
“I am helping. I’m providing commentary.”
The leader moved toward me.
Nero was still fighting the other four and Couldn’t get to me.
The creature loomed over me and Used its fangs to touch my wolf fur.
“Finally,” it breathed. “You turned. We’ve been waiting for this moment. Almost doubted it was you.”
I tried to growl and It came out as a squeak.

“We saw you stop the sleepwalking curse. Saw you break the rungs with your blood. We’ve been watching you, Remi.”
“Get off me,” I tried to say. Came out as angry whining. “What do you want from me?”
It understood somehow.
“A lot of things.” It leaned closer. “But first, you must not be Alph Nero’s mate. You must not be with him.”
“Why?”
Its eyes gleamed. “Because you my dear, you will give him greater power. Real power. Once we separate you. Once we show you what you really are.”
“I don’t understand-
It grabbed me with its claws digging into my fur and started run ing.
I screamed for Nero and the sound came out as a howl.

Chapter 18
He turned and saw me being carried away. The four creatures still attacking him.
Nero was out of sight and I couldn’t see him or hear him.
I was going to die.
For real this time.
“Oh fuck,” Parrot said. “This is bad. This is really bad. Why didn’t we learn to walk faster?”
The creature suddenly stopped and Hit something.
No. Someone.
It was Nero. he was … Bigger….Bloodier and Angrier.
Standing right in front of us.
“Where,” he said. Voice barely human. “Are you taking my bride
The creature dropped me.
I fell hard under a tree. Tried to get up Couldn’t.
Nero faced the creature.
“Last chance,” Nero said. “Leave. Now.”
“Or what?”
“Or I paint this forest with your insides.”
The creature laughed. “You’re injured. You can barely-”
Nero moved. I didn’t see it happen.
One second the creature was standing. The next it was in pieces. Everywhere.
Nero stood in the middle of it covered in gore… Breathing hard and walked to me.
“Now shift back,” he said. ” Follow me.”
He shifted back to human slowly and I watched. Tried to copy.
It hurt. Everything hurt.
But within seconds I was human again naked and Shaking.
I hugged him tight.
He stiffened. Then relaxed slightly.

“No need to thank me,” he said. “I just hate to lose a fight. And you belong to me. No one touches what’s mine except me,”
“You’re hurt.”
“I’m fine.” He pulled back. The injuries were already healing and Closing up. “Stronger now. The fight helped.”
