When we got to our clothes, or what was left of them, Nero set a wood fire.

“Just a few hours till dawn,” he said. “Then we head back.”

I sat in silence for maybe two minutes before I couldn’t hold it in anymore.

“Please tell me you’re not about to start talking,” Nero said.

“So I’m Marcus’s aunt now, right? Since you marked me and we’re mated? I’m the Luna? Will I be sleeping in your room? Do I wear princess clothes and attend meetings? Do’I get a crown? What about-”

He ignored me. Which was probably smart.

I stood up. Stretched. My body ached from shifting twice in one night.

“After what we just experienced, we need a drink.”

“There’s no bar in the middle of the forest.”

“No. But there’s that.” I pointed at a tree about twenty feet away. Coconut tree. We can get some and wet our throats. Celebrate not dying.”

“I don’t celebrate not dying. That’s just called living.”

“You’re so dramatic.”

I walked over to the tree. It had weird purple roots attached to the stem but the fruit looked exactly like coconut. Round. Brown. Perfect.

I climbed up. My body protested but I ignored it. Grabbed two of the biggest ones.

Came back down.

I cracked mine open on a rock. Started drinking. It tasted sweet little bitter. Kind of like honey mixed with something else. But good.

Really good.

I brought the second one to Nero. He’d gotten comfortable by the fire, Shirtless, Sweating from the heat. Looking like some kind of sin god.

I swallowed hard. Tried not to stare at his chest.

Failed.

“No.”

I gave him the coconut. “I’m fine drinking both if you don’t want it. But I’m sure you’re thirsty after that fight.

He took it from me. Looked at it for a second. Sniffed it.

Then gulped it down.

“Don’t forget I saved your life,” he said. “You’re mine.”

“Yeah yeah. Possessive alpha. I get it.”

“Do you?”

“You’ve mentioned it like fifty times. I’m yours. You don’t share. Blah blah blah.”

“Careful, little wolf. I’m still strong enough to prove it.”

I looked down. Right. Still completely faked.

We sat there for a few minutes. The drink settled in my stomach Warm. Spreading through my body like liquid heat.

It was morning now. The sky getting lighter. Clear enough to see. Time to head back to the palace.

“How is it the forest isn’t filled with guards looking for you?” I asked. “You’ve been missing for hours. Shouldn’t there be search parties?”

“Something big is going on back there. Whatever it is, they’re distracted.”

“Or they don’t care if you’re found.”

He looked at me. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing. Just thinking out loud.”

But I wasn’t. I was thinking about what the creatures said. About his mother.

Something was wrong at that palace.

I just knew I needed to be By his side. For whatever came next.

“I’m ready to go when you are,” I said.

We got dressed. Or tried to. My dress was shredded. His pants were barely holding together.

Ten minutes later, I felt it.

Heat.

Starting low in my belly. Spreading

But I was BURNING.

I looked at Nero. Really looked.

Had he always been that attractive?

The firelight on his skin. The way his muscles moved. The sweat making everything shine.

I wanted to lick his abs.

What the FUCK was wrong with me?

“Remi.” His voice was strained. “Stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you want to climb me like a tree.”

“There’s a stream nearby. We need water. Cold water.”

We walked faster. The need was getting stronger. The attraction. The want.
