I turned to Remi. She was still naked in my bed. My mark was fresh on her neck. I could still taste her blood on my tongue.

And my brother just accused her of unlocking my chains.

Victoria sat at the head of the table like she owned the place. Sophie and Marcus stood beside her.

The second Victoria saw me, she stood up. Walked straight toward me.

And raised her hand to slap me.

“Think very carefully, Auntie,” I said quietly. “You’re not my mother. You just look like her. And I won’t think twice about sending you to the punishment quarters.”

She yanked her hand back. But she didn’t back down.

“Your bride injured my sister,” she said. “YOUR mother. And you’ve done nothing.”

“My mother tried to strangle her first.”

“According to who? The girl who killed your last bride?” Victoria’s smile was cold. “The girl who’s clearly manipulating you? Look at you. You marked her. MARKED her. After knowing her for two days.”

The table cracked under my grip.

“Careful, Auntie.”

“Or what? You’ll punish me for telling the truth?” She leaned closer. “That girl has you wrapped around her finger. And when she destroys you–and she will–don’t come crying to me.”

“I don’t have time for this.” I walked past her. Sat down at the table, “Abel. Where are the witnesses?”

Sophie stepped forward. She was wearing a dress cut too low. Tring too hard.

“I saw her that night,” Marcus said. “Remi. She was dressed in… in black lace. Barely anything. Walking toward your chambers.”
