Chapter 9
REMI POV
So. That happened.
I was lying in Nero’s bed. Alone. Still naked. My whole body aching in the best way possible.
Well. That was the most fucking amazing thing I’ve ever experienced.
I froze. That wasn’t MY thought.
“Hello?” I said out loud.
Oh good. You can hear my voice now. Finally.
“What the ” I sat up. “Who is this?”
Your WOLF, idiot. Who else would be in your head?
My wolf. My wolf was TALKING to me.

I’d never heard her before. Not like this. Other wolves talked about hearing their inner wolf from childhood. Mine had always been in my thoughts…like a memory
Until now.
“You sound exactly like me…you can talk?”
I’ve ALWAYS been able to talk. You just couldn’t hear me. Until E marked us.
“Nero.”
Hot Alpha Nero. Our MATE. The one who just fucked us into next week.
“Oh my god. You’re the horny wolf.”
You were a VIRGIN. Now you’ve had sex with the hottest alpha in the region. I’d say that’s a WIN.
“Shut up.” I grabbed a pillow and hugged it. “This is insane. Everything about this is insane.”
What’s insane is that you’re COMPLAINING. We just got the best dick of our life.
“I literally almost died. Multiple times. Someone POISONED m
But you didn’t die. And now we have a mate. See? Everything worked out.
I touched my neck. The mark was still sore. I could feel where h teeth had sunk in.
And I smiled.
Just thinking about it made my face hot.
SEE? You liked it.
“I’m not discussing my sex life with my own wolf.”
It’s MY sex life too. We share a body, remember?

Chapter 9
“This is so weird.”
I got up. Found Nero clothes–well, I put it on.
Then I started pacing.
“Okay. Think, Remi. Someone tried to kill me. His mother or he twin–I still can’t tell them apart. And that green stuff under the dead bride’s fingernails…”
I stopped.
The green substance.
The Tunise leaves I’d eaten had anti–poison properties. My grandmother had taught me that.
“Holy shit,” I whispered. “There’s no curse at all? What if someone’s been POISONING all the brides?“..
That… actually makes sense.
“Right? And I only survived because I accidentally ate something that counteracted it.”
But what about the runes? The power?
“I don’t know. That part doesn’t make senselyet.”
A knock on the window made me jump.
I turned. Two faces were pressed against the glass.
Jade and Zaya.
“Oh my god.” Fran to the window and opened it. “What are you doing here?”
“Rescuing you,” Jade whispered. She was clinging to a rope. “What does it look like?”
Zaya climbed in first. Looked me up and down. “Though you don’t really look like you need rescuing.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You’re GLOWING. And is that-” She squinted at my neck. “Is that a BITE MARK?”
My hand flew to cover it. “It’s nothing.”
“That’s a mating mark,” Jade said flatly. “You slept with him.”
“I–it’s complicated-”
“Did he force you?” Zaya’s expression went dark. “Because if he cd-”
“No! God, no. It was… consensual.” My face was burning. “Very consensual.”
VERY consensual, my wolf purred..
Jade grinned. “So? How was it?”
“We don’t have time for this,” Zaya interrupted. She pulled out her phone. Showed me a screen full of calculations. “I did the math. We have a twelve–minute window before the guard rotation. We need to leave NOW”
Reality crashed back.

Escape. Get away from the accusations and the poison and this crazy family.
“I’m sorry we left you at the wedding,” Jade said. “We were scared But we’re here now. Let’s go.”
Don’t, my wolf said sharply. Don’t leave our mate.
“I… okay. What’s the plan?”
We’re MARKED. We can’t leave-
“Shut up,” I muttered.
“What?” Jade asked.
“Nothing. My wolf. She’s being loud.”
“Since when can you hear your wolf?” Zaya’s eyes narrowed. “You’ve never been able to before.”
“Since… after. You know. The marking.
Zaya and Jade exchanged looks.
“That’s not normal,” Zaya said.
“Nothing about this situation is normal,” I shot back. “Can we jus GO?”
REMI. Don’t do this. The drawings–he’s been dreaming about us for MONTHS. We’re connected to him-
“I don’t care,” I said out loud.
“You don’t care about what?” Jade was already at the window. “Come on. Zaya’s right. We’re losing time.”
Fine. But when this goes badly, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
“Noted,” I muttered. “Now how about I name you? Since you’re being so chatty.”
You’re going to name me?
“Yep How about… Parrot? Since you won’t shut up.”
You did NOT just name a WOLF after a BIRD.
Jade went first. She was from a clan that could shift anytime–no just during full moons. Royal bloodline. She’d run away from all that, and we’d been friends ever since I saved her from bar fight.
“Coast is clear,” she whispered up. “Come on.”
I climbed out after Zaya. The rope was thin. My hands were shaking.
And that’s when I felt it.
A pull. Deep in my chest.
Like someone had hooked a rope around my heart and yanked.
The bond.
Told you, my wolf said smugly,

We ran across the courtyard. Zaya led us through shadows, avoiding the patrol routes she’d memorized.
“There,” she whispered. Pointed at the fence. “We piled rocks on he other side yesterday. We can use them to climb over.”
“Wait.” I grabbed her arm. “If you piled rocks on the OTHER side how do we get DOWN?”
Zaya blinked. “Oh. Shit.”
“You’re the smart one and you forgot about getting DOWN?”
“I was doing MATH under pressure!”
Jade shifted. One second she was human, the next she was a massive gray wolf.
She crouched low. Gestured with her head. Climb on.
“You want us to RIDE you over the fence?”
Jade huffed. Just do it.
Zaya climbed on first. Then me.
Jade ran. Fast. Then JUMPED.
We sailed over the fence. Landed hard on the other side.
W
“Holy shit,” I gasped. “That actually worked.”
Jade shifted back. Grinned. “Told you.”
We started running.
And that’s when it
got
bad.
The pull in my chest got WORSE. Stronger. Like something was ripping me apart from the inside.
“Remi?” Zaya looked back. “You okay?”
“Yeah. Fine. Keep going.”
I wasn’t fine.
Every step away from the palace made it worse. My chest burned. My legs felt weak.
The bond. It was pulling me BACK.
This is what happens when you run from your mate, my wolf sa. Didn’t I TELL you?
“Shut up, Parrot,”
I am NOT answering to that name,
We ran through the woods, My vision was starting to blur.
“Almost there,” Jade called back. “I can see the road.”
