CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED
DAMON’S POV
I watched as the amusement in her eyes die down instantly, but I wasn’t done speaking.
“The fact that we met, that I loved you at some point, that I took my father’s punishment for you–those were all mistakes,” I said slowly so every word stuck in her head. “But I’ve changed, Selene. And I don’t repeat mistakes.”
She glared at me, her breath turning shallow. “What we had was solid. We were good together, everyone knew that. Your mother was already planning our future wedding before she died. You don’t mean what you’re saying, Damon.”
“Oh, but I do,” I responded. “The holidays are over now. Go back to wherever you came from before I make another mistake that guarantees you don’t.”
Her lips parted, but no sound came out at first. The glare in her eyes wavered, replaced by something darker–resentment and
fear.
“I won’t let you rewrite our story,” she snapped finally. “You don’t get to pretend I was just a phase in your life.”
“I’m not pretending,” I said calmly. “We both know I lack that ability. I’ve moved on.”
She let out a humorless laugh. “You’ve moved on to what, Damon? Five failed marriages and a sixth one built on lies? I’m the only one for you and deep down in that stony heart of yours you know it.”
My jaw tightened.
“You think Gabrielle doesn’t feel it?” Selene continued, stepping closer. “The distance and the secrets around you. You think she hasn’t already started questioning things?”
I didn’t react.
That would only encourage her.
“She already thinks you cheated,” she added softly. “That seed is planted. I didn’t even have to do anything. She came to me because she knows what’s between us. And because she knows her place.”
That was when I finally looked at her.
“Careful,” I warned. “You don’t want to cross that line.”
Her smile trembled but she pressed on anyway. “You can threaten me all you want, Damon. But we both know the truth.”
I took a step forward, forcing her to step back until the edge of the bed hit the back of her knees.
“You don’t know my wife,” I said quietly. “And you don’t know me anymore.”
Her breath hitched. “I know you better than anyone.”
“No,” I corrected. “You knew a version of me that doesn’t exist anymore. Leave this town and leave my wife alone. Or I’ll make you.”
“You can’t do this to me,” she said, trying to come closer but I kept space between us. “I don’t have anyone else, don’t you get it? I’m going to be alone.”
“Sit back down, Selene.”
She took some steps back and sat on the bed without question. “I understand your marriage is for a year. You can keep fucking the virgin until you get bored but remember there’s a real woman here, waiting for you.”
“I’d prefer if you don’t,” I said. “Don’t wait for me, Selene. Go out there and live your life because whatever we used to have is dead.”

She slammed her hands on her lap. “You have no idea the kind of life I’ve had to leave. I can’t go back.”
“Frankly, I don’t care,” I shoved out a breath. “I’ll have my assistant bring you a cheque. Take the money and start a new life anywhere in the world. I’m only doing this for my mother.”
She stared at me, her chest rising and falling, and her eyes burning with something between desperation and rage.
I knew she was up to no good the moment she returned to my life. There had to be another reason she wanted to get back together aside from her feelings for me.
She stood up again. “You can go ahead and play house with your wife. But deep down, you know no one else would love you knowing what I do.”
My jaw ticked but she kept speaking.
“You think Gabrielle will stay with you once she finds out the truth about who you truly are?” She asked, her voice shaking
My hand reached for her throat, wrapping around her neck tightly before I could stop myself. “You will keep your fucking mouth shut.”
A gasp tore from her throat and her fingers clawed at my wrist as my grip tightened.
“Breathe one word to Gabrielle and I’ll make sure it’s the last thing you do,” I said, feeling repulsed by just touching her. “You don’t want to fucking cross me.”
Selene’s face started to redden, still trying to pull my hands away from her throat—and failing.
She choked out a laugh. “Am I wrong though? Just admit you enjoyed these moments when you get to touch me.”
I let go of her as if she had caught on fire and stepped back. She fell back on the bed without my support, trying to catch her breath and laughing at the same time.
She raised her eyes to mine and arched a brow. “You know I’m right, don’t you? You know Gabrielle won’t want to be with you anymore once she finds out the truth. No one will, except me.”
I pulled out my handkerchief from my jacket’s inner pocket and wiped my hands as if touching her stained them. “And since you know me so well, you know how much I hate repeating myself.”
Then I turned to walk out of the room without another word. As I reached the door, her voice floated to me.
“Your secrets are safe with me, Damon.”
