Madeline:
For the first few minutes, I watched his face in utter shock.
Then I drew in a sharp breath, hid my face in my hands, and rubbed my neck.
"So she wanted you to kill me?" I asked Mathew.
He nodded casually.
Well, at first I thought he fucking attacked me, but then I realized he was trying to grab me and pull me aside. I don't know why he did that, but he did.
"But why?" I asked him.
Once again, he shrugged, making a foolish face as the corners of his lips turned down.
"All I know is that she wants you gone," he commented dramatically.
Then he gestured for the driver to leave.
He had already instructed the driver what to do.
The driver would tell everyone that he had been attacked by a man wearing a ski mask and that he panicked, sped off, and left me behind.
"Okay, I'll be honest with you," Mathew said as he turned to me.
We were sitting on a big log at the side of the road.
I noticed that he kept pulling out chocolates from his jacket.
He even handed me one, as if it would balance our sugar levels after giving me such terrifying news.
"Well, I'm listening," I said dramatically.
I held the chocolate bar in my hand.
I had not even finished one when he had already swallowed five of them.
He must have been running very low on sugar.
"What is so special about your tears?" he asked, dangling his legs like a child while focusing on his chocolate.
My spine stiffened and I drew in a sharp breath.
He noticed it and raised one eyebrow.
"Hmm, so there is something about your tears," he commented.
I shifted slightly on the log to turn toward him.
But I lost my balance and almost fell.
He quickly wrapped one arm around my waist and pulled me back, securing me in place.
That was when I noticed the way he was staring at me.
"Wow, you're beautiful."
The moment he said that, I placed my hands on his chest and pushed him back.
"I'm married," I said.
He shrugged, looking completely unconcerned.
"I'm not," he replied.
"Anyway, I was just complimenting your beauty. Don't act like you don't know it. Everybody thinks the same about you, that you are beautiful."
It was the casual way he spoke.
I was not excited by him, but it was still a compliment.
Women often grow shy when they receive compliments like that.
So I could feel my cheeks warming slightly, but I forced myself to focus on the main subject.
Once again, he made the comment, this time with a cheeky grin.
"And why are you helping me? Aren't you their loyal royal beta?" I questioned anxiously.
I slowly pulled myself away on the log as it began to hit me that Silver and Elgin could be playing a game with me.
If she found out that the medicine was actually my tears, she was probably planning something so nasty that I would not even see it coming.
For all I knew, she could have planted Mathew to get my secrets out.
"Well, in that case, you will have to trust me," he commented casually.
He jumped off the log and held his hands up for me.
His fingers moved, beckoning me with another crazy smirk on his face.
"Come on, I'll catch you," he said softly in a deep, husky tone.
"No need. I can jump and land just fine," I replied.
I jumped, and with my terrible luck, I landed straight on my ass.
He started laughing like a bully while I narrowed my eyes at him.
"I don't trust you," I stated and he let out a deep sigh, his smile fading immediately.
"Then test me. I'll pass any test with flying colors," he commented.
I stared at his face in silence.
Then I nodded.
"Fine. There is a video on your alpha's phone that I want gone. Let's see if you truly are a good man who wants to do good," I stated, nodding to myself.
I realized that I was taking a huge step that could get me into trouble more than anything else.
