Elgin:
I was frantically going through my phone.
My fingers and palms had started to turn sweaty.
I looked up casually and noticed several eyes narrowed at me.
The alphas who had looked supportive when I arrived now stood with their hands on their hips, some with folded over their chests, shaking their heads in disapproval.
"I think—I think somebody deleted it," I blurted out.
Graham shifted away from me, one hand on his hip while the other rubbed his forehead.
"Really? That is your excuse?" Madeline snapped.
I turned to look at her, and then my eyes moved to Yuvonne.
She was going to use this incident to present herself as the most innocent victim dragged into everyone else's mess.
I hated the thought of it.
"It was on my phone. I even sent it to my email," I told the leaders.
I tried to step closer to the table, but Lord William gestured with his palm for me to stop right there.
"I cannot begin to imagine how I am feeling right now."
Lord William's comment turned the entire hall silent.
"Then can you imagine how I'm feeling?" Yuvonne spoke up, her voice cracking.
Graham rolled his eyes, but I could tell why she was upset.
By the end of the day, my asshole of a friend had forced himself on her.
But somehow his problems seemed bigger, and hers did not.
The only reason I was angry with Yuvonne was because she had messed with me and because I wanted revenge and her pack.
Otherwise, I would have let it all slide for Madeline.
"Your Highness, how many times are we going to suffer because we are women?" Madeline said with intensity.
"My husband is in a coma. Her husband is in prison. So all the alphas around have started thinking that anyone can come and harass us." Her voice carried weight.
"And then put accusations on us, drag us before the council, and shame us."
Madeline spoke with rising anger.
Screw the pack.
I was probably ruining my chances with Madeline by going against Yuvonne.
"Graham, you came here with such huge accusations, and now you're saying you don't even have proof," Lord William said loudly.
"I'm not saying every victim must have perfect proof for everything,” he continued.
"But the problem is," Lord William paused, "you have done this too many times." I bit my tongue awkwardly.
"You two have constantly been in disputes with these women. Every time you come here with another wild story." he slammed his hand on the table.
"And now you're telling me not only was an alpha easily drugged, but both of your phones suddenly had the videos deleted?" Graham shifted in his spot.
"You just said you saw it on your phone."
Lord William began shouting at us, and our heads slowly lowered.
She was clearly trying to draw attention to the punishment we might face for lying before the council.
"Besides, if I am such a terrible person who deserves punishment, why did Graham withdraw the case?"
Yuvonne had just pulled the ground from beneath our feet.
Now she had turned the attack on us.
That was when it seemed like Graham got an idea, and he suddenly slapped his hands together.
"Because I have been blackmailed." For him, it was an aha moment.
"Yes, exactly. Now you know why I took the case back?" he spoke loudly, looking around for a moment as if expecting appreciation.
Everyone began to wonder if his explanation was true.
Then I heard Madeline scoff.
And in my gut, I knew she had come prepared with a response to his statement.
We were going to end up looking very bad.
Now all the eyes were on Madeline.
She took one step forward.
"That is not the case. He took the case back on his own free will." Madeline had a comforting look on her face.
"And I have proof as well." her words made heads snapped at her.
"And this time, unlike them, I am not going to say somebody deleted that proof."
Madeline spoke with such authority that both Graham and I gulped at the same time.
