Silver:
For four whole days, it felt as though Elgin belonged only to us, me and my daughters.
Nothing pulled our attention away from each other.
Elgin checked on Elara from time to time, but that was all.
He did not visit Rosetta, nor did he talk about her or Elara.
For the first time in a long while, I felt genuinely at peace.
We spent those days preparing for the skit and trying on costumes.
The performance was meant to be comedic with a message.
In it, our daughters would play older children while we portrayed their aging parents.
One daughter played the troublemaker.
She insisted she was not really our child because we supposedly did not care about her.
The other daughter, playing the sensible one, would immediately call out the lie.
She would produce a DNA test and prove that we were her real parents, leaving the first daughter embarrassed and guilty.
The entire thing was ridiculous, but that was what made it so entertaining.
The girls loved working together, and seeing them enjoy themselves was the best part.
Today was finally the day of the event, and everyone would be there.
I would be at the center of it all.
Not only was I the Luna of Alpha Elgin, but Elgin was also expected to take responsibility for several packs in the future.
There was even a possibility that Ron's pack, Byron's Pack, and perhaps Graham's as well would eventually fall under his authority because of the influence held by my father and Elgin's mother.
My father and his mother were also expected to assume leadership positions.
The letters had arrived, and they were thrilled.
Lady Greta, in particular, was grateful to me. By the end of it all, my father had helped her secure that letter.
"You look amazing."
An alpha's wife stopped beside me and complimented my white dress.
My makeup had been professionally done, and I felt untouchable.
For the first time in a long while, everything seemed to be going my way.
People had either forgotten about my little affair or were too afraid to mention it.
They knew better than to test my patience.
One wrong word, and the consequences would be severe.
As a result, everyone treated me with the respect I believed I deserved.
The thought of Madeline almost made me laugh.
What had she expected? That an education would make her superior to everyone else?
Look at her now.
Hiding in a cabin.
However, I could tell his mood soured at the mention of her.
"Don't speak of her. She ruined everything for everyone. She's a curse. And so is her daughter."
He muttered the words under his breath, but it felt like a message meant for all of us, especially me.
It was his way of making it clear that he was already irritated by Elara, or by the thought of taking responsibility for her.
"Was she annoying you?" I asked, hinting at the call he had received just a few hours earlier about Elara throwing a tantrum.
He rolled his eyes and shook his head.
"Don't even ask me. She's so fucking annoying. It's like, why the hell do I have an extra daughter I don't even feel connected to?" he groaned, adjusting his coat.
I had a feeling he had given her a good scolding.
That satisfied me.
Smiling, I shifted closer to him, wrapping one arm around his and resting my head on his shoulder.
Our attention turned to the stage.
One by one, the teachers came forward.
They had planned skits, various performances, and dances by the younger children.
We laughed at some of them, especially the ones who slipped.
Finally, it was time for our performance, the biggest event of the evening.
The performance of Alpha Elgin and his wife, the future Alpha and Luna of so many packs that no one could ever outnumber us.
