Elgin:
"Say something," she whispered.
However, there was something in her eyes that told me she wasn't telling the truth.
"Silver, I am warning you. Tell me the truth."
I was on the verge of breaking down.
"What is going on? Is Daddy not our daddy?" Hailey asked, and my heart started to crumble.
"No, that's not true. He is your father," Silver quickly told the girls before looking back at me.
"You can't possibly do this to us. Everybody is watching. Our daughters are watching. How can you demand another test? How do you know they didn't mess up the results?"
She pointed toward the crowd.
"The fact that they secretly did the test—doesn't that tell you they were trying to create a rift between us?"
For a moment, even I hesitated.
"Then let's go," I said. "We'll get another test right now and wait for the results."
I grabbed Silver by the arm and started dragging her away.
Her father tried to stop me, but I wasn't going to stop.
"Is it true? Really? Alpha Elgin has no clue his wife has been lying to him?"
I heard someone from the crowd whisper.
My grip on Silver's arm tightened.
Meanwhile, her father and my mother gathered Hailey and Hannah.
I shoved Silver into the car when my phone suddenly rang.
By then, everybody had started leaving their seats and crowding around us. Cameras were practically in our faces.
I glanced at the screen.
It was my doctor.
"Hello?" I answered, pushing one of the cameras away as it nearly hit my face.
By that point, Lord John had already helped Hailey and Hannah into the back seat alongside Silver.
He then climbed in beside her.
My mother quickly got into the passenger seat while I remained standing outside the car.
"Get in the car and talk to your doctor," my mother said, snapping me out of my thoughts and reminding me that countless eyes were still on me.
As soon as I got into the car and slammed the door shut, I put the call on speaker.
"Your Highness, I'm watching the news—the livestream—and I think I should have been the one to tell you. I conducted the DNA test myself after receiving the signed consent forms, and it is true. Hailey and Hannah are not your daughters."
The words nearly knocked the phone out of my hand.
"Doctor, you know that if you fucked up, your head will be on a pole for the entire world to see what happens when someone gives the wrong news to an Alpha, right?"
I wanted him to tell me he would run another test.
Maybe I wanted him to tell me he could be wrong.
Silver quickly wrapped her arms around the girls and pulled them closer.
"Son, let's go home first."
It was my mother.
Her voice brought me the smallest sense of peace.
At least there was still someone who wasn't betraying me.
So I listened.
But I knew one thing for certain.
Nothing was ever going to be the same again.
"Mummy, is Daddy angry with us?" Hannah asked her mother.
If this had happened at a different time, and if it had been about something else, then even in my anger, I would have pulled my daughters into a hug.
But right now, I couldn't even bring myself to look at them.
All I could see was the betrayal.
All I could see were the lies.
All I could see was Silver's deception staring back at me through them.
I just couldn't do it.
So I started the car and drove home in silence, my mind consumed by thoughts of what I was going to do about Silver.
