Madeline:
I had walked out of the cabin and sat by the road, watching the livestream with a smile on my lips.
If only Byron were awake.
If only Baxter were sitting beside me.
If only I had all three of my children in my lap.
We would have enjoyed this skit so much.
I watched the entire thing before opening the comment section, and somehow, it was even better.
The comments did not disappoint.
Everyone was laughing at Elgin, calling him clueless.
Many people even brought up Elara and the fact that he had never truly accepted her.
All the while, he had been raising someone else's children.
I lowered my head and put my phone down, taking a deep breath.
A moment later, the screen lit up again.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Well, it worked," Mathew said and I smiled.
"Thank you," I replied. "Thank you for the help."
I was genuinely grateful.
The people I had never expected to become my friends were the ones who had surprised me the most.
Mathew had supported me, and this entire skit would never have been possible without him.
Still, there was one question I wanted to ask.
"How did you know Hailey and Hannah definitely weren't Elgin's daughters?"
For a moment, there was silence on the other end.
"Let's just say I knew years ago that when she claimed Elgin was the father, she was lying."
His answer only deepened my confusion.
The silence that followed made it clear he didn't want to discuss it further.
I could tell he was holding something back.
So I respected his boundaries and let the matter go.
The irony wasn't lost on me.
Years ago, both of us had been pregnant at the same time, and he had chosen her because he believed having children with an Alpha's daughter would benefit him more.
Even though he later claimed she had been forced upon him, the decision had been entirely his.
Time and time again, he had chosen Hailey and Hannah over Elara.
I did feel sorry for the two little girls.
They shouldn't have been on that stage watching everything unfold.
I had told Mary Jane that.
Mathew had even paid her and instructed her to take the children away once the chaos started.
But it had been inevitable.
There were too many eyes on Elgin.
She never would have been allowed anywhere near the girls once everything began.
"Anyway, let me know if you need anything, okay?" Mathew said before hanging up.
I nodded, even though he couldn't see me.
Then I picked up my basket and started gathering herbs.
