Madeline:
"You thought you got rid of me?" Byron joked, making me smile.
"I'm so glad you're up again," I said softly.
With a nod of his head, he acknowledged both our relief and how much he had worried us.
"I still don't understand how a scratch could be that poisonous," Byron commented.
He reached toward the back of his neck, but a fresh herbal paste was wrapped around the wound and secured with plastic bandages.
"You'd be surprised what Lady Eugenia is capable of," Ron hissed, likely remembering our conversation from the other night.
"Tell me," Byron insisted.
Before Ron could answer, I raised a finger.
"Actually, I have better news for both of you. How about we talk about that first? Something good to sweeten the mood."
A smile spread across my face.
I could already tell they were surprised to see me smiling.
With everything that had happened, the Madeline they knew would have been sitting here with tears in her eyes.
"Since you're both here, I have something important to share. Something very interesting."
I spoke as though I were about to deliver an award-winning speech.
I gestured for Ron to sit beside Byron, and once he did, I pulled out my phone.
Then I played the videos I had downloaded from the livestream.
They watched silently.
Meanwhile, I hurried behind the couch to watch the videos again.
No matter how many times I saw them, they still made me happy.
I had even watched them multiple times just to see if I could spot Elara.
When I couldn't find her, I realized Elgin must have been keeping her somewhere else.
Once the video ended, the two men started turning toward me.
Byron couldn't move very quickly, so I rushed forward and snatched the phone from their hands, grinning proudly.
"How did you pull that off?" Byron asked, his eyebrows scrunching together.
I shrugged with a grin.
"I'm only getting started, Byron."
My voice hardened as memories of Elgin and the way he had treated me and my children resurfaced.
"They've taken too much from me."
My tone grew colder.
"That was their biggest mistake. They left me with nothing to lose. They left me with no fear."
My fists clenched.
I looked down at the screen before meeting their eyes again.
"So now I'm going to show them exactly what a Gray Wolf is capable of."
My jaw tightened.
"They wanted a monster." I held up the phone and smirked.
"Then I'll show them a real monster."
I finished with complete determination, my grip tightening around the phone.
I wasn't stopping here.
There were more plans already in motion.
Much worse ones.
Because Kaylee had yet to face the consequences of her disgusting actions.
"But you need to be careful, Madeline. You know what kind of people they are."
Ron continued explaining why I needed to slow down, but as I shook my head, he already understood.
I wasn't going to listen to anyone anymore.
I had tasted blood, and now I had a taste for it.
As I looked back at them, a strange pain suddenly shot through my chest.
It felt old somehow, as if it had come from the past and only now decided to surface.
