As soon as Elgin shoved my daughters away from him, my breath caught in my throat.

Both of them stumbled backward and fell to the floor.

For a moment, panic seized me.

It looked like one of them had hit her head, but thankfully, both girls were unharmed.

My father rushed over and pulled Hailey into a hug, while I quickly picked Hannah up in my arms.

"Have you lost your mind?" I screamed at Elgin, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"What? What did I do wrong?" Elgin shouted back, pointing at his chest. "These two filthy pieces of shit were trying to get their hands on something that belongs to me, something bought with my money."

I stared at him in shock. This was the man I had been in love with.

"So, just like that, you don't remember anything?" I asked.

Gently setting Hannah down, I walked toward him so I could look him in the eye.

"All the time they spent with you means nothing now?"

I shook my head in disbelief.

"It's astonishing," I said. "After years together, people grow attached even to animals, don't they? But the moment you found out they aren't your blood, all your love disappeared?"

My voice cracked as I spoke.

"Was your love for them nothing more than pride in believing they were your biological children?"

Elgin placed his hands on his waist and scoffed, rolling his eyes.

I slowly nodded and let out a bitter smile.

"Of course," I muttered.

"I should have expected that from you," I hissed.

“The man who treated his own blood like shit. I should have known you would treat these two innocent girls, who had grown up believing you are their father, the same way.”

The moment those words left my mouth, Elgin snapped his head toward me.

He looked almost offended.

"You will not speak about my daughter," he hissed.

My body tensed at the mention of Elara.

"Oh, so suddenly she's your daughter?" I asked, laughing bitterly as I pointed at him. "This is the same man who didn't even want her alive, and now she's suddenly his entire world."

I let out a mocking laugh before clapping my hands together.

"I understand. I know I fucked up. I made mistakes," I said, the amusement fading from my voice.

Suddenly, I remembered I wasn't in a position to act cocky.

She had come inside with her father, dressed up as though she were attending a wedding.

I didn't even have to ask what she was trying to do. I already knew.

She was trying to take advantage of the situation.

"Are these toys not for us?" Hailey whimpered as she looked at my father.

My father still hadn't managed to say a single word. I had shamed him too.

"No, these toys are not for you," Elgin replied coldly. "They're for my daughter. My blood. Elara."

The same man who had spent so much time cursing Elara was suddenly singing her praises as he pointed at his chest.

Hailey started crying, while Hannah took a few steps toward him again.

I caught her by the arm before she could get any closer.

I knew he might push her away again if she reached him.

"I want to be with Daddy," Hannah cried. "I know he's just angry, but he'll never hate me."

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I listened to her.

I looked up at Elgin, silently begging him to see that little girl's pain.

But his expression remained hard and unyielding.
