Livia:
I felt guilty too, especially after Daniel said all those things to me.
He had never treated me that way before, nor had he ever looked at me with such disrespect.
I knew it was all my fault, but what was I supposed to do?
For the first time in my life, I had fallen in love with someone.
I knew I was wrong, yet I just couldn't stop myself.
At the time, only one thought kept running through my mind.
What if the woman he had married wasn't worthy of him?
Otherwise, how could she lose him like that?
And not just him, but even her own daughter.
I don't know what came over me then, but I convinced myself that she couldn't be a good mother.
Otherwise, she wouldn't have lost them. In my mind, she didn't deserve them if she couldn't hold on to them.
I took Gina home with me.
By then, one thing was certain.
I couldn't let Gina and him meet each other.
Otherwise, it would create a huge problem.
"You're home already? I thought you'd be out for hours."
My mother was speaking cheerfully when she appeared and noticed Gina with me.
Gina's grip tightened around my hand, and I realized whatever she had been through had made her afraid of the world, or at least of new people.
"It's all right. This is my mother."
Then I turned to my mom. "Mom, this is Gina."
My introduction was deliberately vague.
My mother silently studied Gina, confusion evident on her face.
"Hello, kid," my mother greeted her. "Come over here and tell me who you are."
She sat down on the couch in the living room and gestured for Gina to come to her.
I gave Gina a small nod, and she walked over to my mother.
My mother smiled as she gently touched her cheek.
"She's so pretty. Who is she?" my mother asked.
