Daniel:
I had expected Livia to do the right thing, and she did.
She texted me late that night to say she was going to bring Gina in the morning.
I was excited for the stranger. When he woke up, I told him I had good news for him.
He had been pretty excited in his room, and I knew that because the moment I told him it was something related to his identity, his face lit up.
For the first time in so long, he actually ate breakfast.
But now it was well past the afternoon, and there was no sign of Livia. Neither was there any sign of Gina.
I had to walk into a stranger's room and meet his empty eyes once again, the silent question lingering in them.
"Um," I uttered, trying to find the right words. "I think Livia is busy somewhere," I said, feeling uneasy.
The way I said it made me watch Baxter's face fall with disappointment.
"Okay, it's all right. I will wait," he said, sitting by the window again, his restless eyes staring outside.
I reached for the door handle, about to leave, when I realized something.
No!
I was just as bad and wrong as Livia.
If I let her make the decision, then what was the difference between her and me?
So I slammed the door shut and locked it, making the stranger turn his head toward me in sheer confusion.
"We found your daughter."
As soon as I said those words, I watched the man's eyes light up.
"There was a little girl before you, a child. She was brought here by the monster," I started to explain.
The man immediately shook his head and pointed a finger at me.
"Wait a minute. What the fuck are you talking about?" he asked anxiously, getting to his feet.
Only then did I realize just how tall and muscular he was.
Standing in front of me, staring down at me, he made me feel as though my heart would stop at any moment.
He was incredibly big, and his presence was intimidating.
"Actually—" I paused, gesturing for him to sit down because I couldn't talk while he was staring at me like that.
After a brief pause, he sat back down, but his face remained tense and his jaw clenched.
I sat across from him, clenching and unclenching the fabric of my shirt before I began to explain everything to him.
I told him how the monster had first brought a little girl, then him, and how we had ended up taking care of both of them.
"Wait, so my daughter, Gina—she's here? Then why the fuck didn't you tell me?"
His emotions were all over the place. One moment, he looked furious.
The next, he looked overjoyed that he had found his family.
"Well then, let's fucking go to her place. I can't stay away from my daughter any longer. I need to know what happened to my family. And I need to know if that fucking monster did anything to my wife."
Baxter was already clenching his fists in anger, ready to set out on a journey to slay the monster.
But I didn't know what had caused Livia's delay. She wasn't answering my calls.
When I called her mother, she didn't answer either.
"We can't," I said, watching him narrow his eyes at me.
His attention shifted fully to me, and it felt as though he was going to kill me.
"Why not?" he questioned through gritted teeth.
"Because—" I tried to answer when my phone beeped.
It was Livia's number.
I smiled, thinking maybe she had slept in and had just woken up.
Before I could answer, Baxter snatched the phone out of my hands.
I panicked and reached for it, but he grabbed me by the neck and held me back, stretching his arm out so I couldn't reach his other hand.
Then he answered the call and put it on speaker.
"Daniel, you need to take Baxter and go fucking hide. President Sawyer has taken his daughter, Gina. And now he's coming after Baxter."
There was panic in Livia's voice, and I felt as though the whole world had shattered beneath me.
