"What are you doing back home?" I asked, shocked to see Nina standing in my home office.

She had arrived with her father, and both of them looked distressed.

"Is Madeline okay?" I shoved the files aside and hurried over to her, grabbing her by the arms and giving them a slight shake.

She looked up at me with teary eyes.

"What about me? Am I okay?" she asked softly.

"Why didn't you ask why I was crying? Why did you only think of her?" she complained, and I honestly didn't understand what was going on.

I let go of her and turned to her father.

"Get my guards ready. Madeline has to be in some kind of trouble," I ordered, fear creeping into my voice.

He looked at his daughter before shaking his head.

"She is fine. Nina wasn't feeling well. That's why she came back home."

The moment he said that, I turned back to Nina, and I felt like ripping her head off.

"You left my wife, my Madeline, behind after I fucking told you to stay with her. Didn't I?" I screamed, watching her wrap her arms around herself before looking at her father, almost as if silently asking him to leave.

"I'll be outside," her father excused himself before walking out of the office.

I turned back to Nina.

"Nina, why the fuck are you back?" I yelled again.

"Because I love you!" she screamed back at me, looking up at me. "Because I can't live without you. It isn't fair. I don't want to be in her shadow. I don't want to be there for her. I want to be there for you."

She kept rambling, but none of it made any sense to me.

"I want us to be together," she whispered as she stepped closer and gently touched my coat.
