"You think I'm a fool?" Ron remarked, snatching the bottle instead of taking the glass.

Apparently, he had realized one glass of wine wouldn't be enough to wash down the news we had just told him about Madeline's father.

"You two have fucked," he commented, making my heart drop at the thought of being that close to Nala.

"What the fuck! No," I groaned, lightly punching his shoulder.

But it was Nala's reaction that stole all my attention.

"Ew, never."

She grimaced, then grabbed a glass of wine and chugged it.

I was offended. Royally offended.

"What do you mean, 'never'?" I snapped.

Judging by the look on her face, she hadn't expected that reaction from me.

But the moment I responded, she went completely still.

"See? I knew something was going on with you two."

Then there was fucking Ron. He just kept drinking.

I guessed the hysteria had finally caught up with him.

He was probably starting to lose his mind because one impossible thing after another kept happening.

"Whatever," I muttered.

I didn't know why I was getting so offended.

I mean, she had every right to react however she wanted. It's not like we were dating.

But why weren't we dating?

"You said it too," she replied, her tone far softer than it usually was with Ron or the others.

I didn't know why I was arguing with her. It wasn't her fault. We weren't a thing.

"You know what?" I snapped, realizing I was probably overreacting. "I'll go home. I have things to take care of."

I quickly got up from the couch.

"Hey, sit down. She didn't mean it like that." Ron reached for my arm, but I was already pulling away.

"No, I really have to go check on things. Elgin will be getting ready in a few hours to head toward the ground. I'll see you guys there."

I didn't even turn around to look at them. I just walked away.

"Wow. That hurt," my wolf commented, referring to how quickly Nala had dismissed the idea of ever wanting to sleep with us.

"Everybody has a choice," I grunted, annoyed that he was giving me a hard time too.

I decided to focus on today's task, which was making sure Elgin didn't come up with any new plans.

When I arrived at the mansion and asked where our future Alpha King was, I found out he was in his bedroom.

And, well, something told me he wasn't alone.

Just to preserve a little dignity, if they had any left.

It looked nasty, especially when he pulled her down and came all over her face.

I recorded that part, watching her stick out her tongue.

Instead, Elgin tossed a napkin onto her face, and she used it to wipe herself clean.

"Go ahead. Wash your face. We're going to cuddle for a while," Elgin remarked.

She happily walked into the bathroom, completely naked.

The way he casually dismissed her with nothing more than a napkin felt suspicious, but she looked completely satisfied.

Elgin lit a cigarette while she came back out, slipped under the covers with him, and rested her head on his chest.

"Yeah, after today, I'll be the fucking example. I'll laugh at how many people thought breaking the rules would get them punished. But look at me. I'm getting treated better than ever."

The moment he started talking, I realized cutting the recording now would be a foolish thing to do.
