"What is going on with you? I called for you," my mother complained, holding a small bag in her hand as she packed her medicine for the trip.

"Why are you sweating?" my mother asked, reaching for my forehead.

I stepped back from her and turned my head toward Madeline.

I didn't know why, but Madeline looked shocked, or maybe just lost.

"Mother," I uttered, keeping my eyes on Madeline.

"That's the president's wife," I said, pointing at Madeline.

"One second. Just let me talk to her once," Madeline requested as she tried to take my hand and pull me aside.
