Madeline:
I was comfortable in her home, and I confidently sat down on the couch.
I expected us to sit down and have a civilized discussion.
I didn't want to come across as a threat to her
But somehow, with the way the world was now, everyone had started fearing one another.
Whenever someone asked a question, it felt as though they were going to punish you if you didn't answer, blackmail you, threaten you, or even torture you.
So I understood why Livia was so concerned.
The problem was, I needed to know that if she had a wolf?
And how had she managed to keep herself safe here?
A thousand questions were running through my mind.
Then an older woman came out of the room, calling out to Livia so lovingly.
Livia also kept referring to her as her mother.
But there was something in that woman's eyes.
I didn't know why, but my heart suddenly sank.
The moment our eyes met, I wanted to know more, but I was forced out of the apartment.
And to be honest, I still would have stayed.
I hadn't chased Livia all the way here just to leave.
But at that moment, after seeing that woman, I couldn't do anything.
I walked out and made my way down the hallway toward the elevator, carrying nothing but shattered pieces inside me that I desperately wanted to pick up.
Then I heard her.
"Madeline."
Livia's voice came from far behind me, barely more than a gentle whisper.
I immediately stopped and turned around to look at her.
"My mother wants to speak with you," Livia said, looking very confused as she rubbed her hands together.
As soon as I heard that, I realized I wasn't the only one who had felt that strange tension between us.
Her mother had felt it too.
Otherwise, why would she call me back to talk?
Livia moved toward the door of their apartment with nervousness, and I slowly followed her back inside.
As soon as I entered, this time I saw her mother sitting on the couch.
Her back was completely straight, and her hands rested in her lap as she repeatedly rubbed her fingers together.
Livia came in behind me and closed the door.
Then she gestured toward the sofa, offering me a seat.
