Isabella looked Ethan straight in the eye. “Ethan, I need a divorce. It’s the only way I’ll ever be okay.”
“If you really feel sorry for me, just let me go. Give me back my freedom.”
“You wanted to know about my dream, right? Fine. I’ll tell you.” Then she turned to her family, her voice softer. “Mom, Uncle, Aunt, I’m kind of hungry. Could you grab me something to eat?”
“You just woke up, you should eat something light. I’ll go home and make you some porridge,” Cynthia said, picking up on Isabella’s hint. She took Zachary with her, giving Isabella and Ethan some privacy.
Isabella nodded.
“Frank, can you give us a minute too?” Isabella asked. “This is between me and Ethan. We need to talk alone.”
Frank looked like he wanted to say something, but Ethan just shook his head. With a helpless sigh, Frank followed the others out of the room.
Now it was just the two of them.
Ethan sat down on the edge of the bed and brushed his hand gently across Isabella’s cheek. His voice was so soft it almost broke. “If you really want a divorce, can’t we talk about it after you’ve healed? You just woke up, and you’re already talking about leaving me.”
“Isabella, are you really that eager to walk away from us?” he asked, his voice trembling. “I know I messed up. I’ll do better, I swear. Can’t you give me one more chance? I even chose you over Natalie, and I’m working on getting your wedding gifts back.”
Isabella’s voice was strangely calm. “Ethan, what if my dream was real? What if it happened in another life?”
“Who would be jealous enough to do that? If I said it was Natalie, would you even believe me?”
Ethan forced a sad, awkward smile. “Isabella, we only get one life. There’s no such thing as a past life. It was just a dream. Sometimes dreams feel so real, but they’re not. Why would Natalie ever be jealous of you? She has everything. She wouldn’t do something like that.”
In his mind, Natalie already had it all. There was no reason for her to be jealous of Isabella. To Ethan, it was just a bad dream, brought on by everything Isabella had been through.
