Natalie shot Susan a glare.
Susan didn’t even flinch.
She was just telling it like it was.
Whether or not Isabella deserved Ethan didn’t really matter. Right now, she was his wife. Legally, officially. Ethan had even brought Isabella back to The Adams Estate. Sure, some people there might not like her, but no one dared say anything.
Once everyone found out the real story behind Ethan’s marriage, their attitude toward Isabella softened. Even Jennifer, who used to have something to say about everything, hadn’t picked a fight with Isabella lately. Only Sophia still tried some petty moves now and then, but honestly, she wasn’t a threat.
“Susan, you don’t care about me anymore,” Natalie complained.
Susan answered calmly, “I care about Ethan, Natalie. You don’t need me to care for you.”
There was a time when Susan treated Natalie really well. She knew Natalie was Ethan’s favorite, his soft spot. But things had changed. Ethan cared about Isabella now, and Susan had to go with the flow. If Isabella was the one spending her life with Ethan, then it made sense to look out for her.
Natalie might be the lady of the Lane family, but she wasn’t Susan’s boss.
Natalie was annoyed, but she kept it together. No way was she going to blow up at Susan. Even if Susan was just the housekeeper, she’d been with the Adams family for years. She was Mike’s wife—Mike, who managed the Adams Estate—and Ethan trusted her completely.
If Natalie lost her cool, it would ruin her sweet, graceful image. It would probably annoy Ethan too.
Susan was Ethan’s housekeeper. Natalie could never do anything to her without Ethan’s say-so. Of course, that didn’t mean she couldn’t talk behind Susan’s back when Ethan was around.
“Susan, you can go. I’ll keep an eye on things here.”
Susan pressed her lips together and walked out.
