Natalie had made mistakes, sure, but she never really hurt Isabella. Still, Isabella just wouldn’t let it go. If Ethan hadn’t stepped in, Natalie might have ended up with a suspended sentence, not just a few days in detention.

“Mom, do we work with the Adams Group a lot?” Natalie asked, pretending not to notice the warning in her mother’s voice.

There was no way she and Isabella would ever make peace. They were enemies for life. She wanted Isabella gone, simple as that. As long as she was still breathing, she’d make sure Isabella never had it easy.

“We’ve always had close business ties. Why are you bringing this up now?” Adelina gave her a look. “You didn’t have a fight with Ethan, did you? Are you worried he’ll come after us?”

Natalie shook her head. “No, it’s not that.” She sipped her soup and set the bowl down. “But maybe we shouldn’t get too wrapped up with the Adams Group. I just think the Gates family shouldn’t depend on them too much. If Ethan ever decided to cut us off…”

“The Gates Group could be in serious trouble. It would hurt us a lot.”

Adelina set down her chopsticks and stared at her daughter. “Natalie, be honest with me. What’s going on between you and Ethan?”

“Our families have always been close. We’ve done business together for ages. It’s not that we depend on them, it’s a win-win. Why would he ever want to end that?”

Adelina looked tired. “Ethan can’t devote his whole life to you. He has his own dreams, his own plans.”

“You already chose Jordan. Stop thinking about Ethan. Our country doesn’t allow you to have two husbands. And honestly, if you chose Ethan, maybe you’d just end up wanting Jordan anyway.”
