CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-SEVENTEEN-1
HAILEY
“Wait, you mean Liam actually has a date? With a real girl?” Valerie shrieked over the phone, her voice a mix of shock and glee. “And she’s a vampire? Oh, this is delicious! This is better than that werewolf soap opera we used to watch!”
“Val, it’s not funny,” I groaned, pacing the length of our bedroom. “Her father is Viktor. You know, the guy who called me a ‘fleabag mutt’ at that last inter-pack summit years ago? The one who tried to pass a motion banning werewolves from attending vampire balls?”
“Oh, I remember him,” Valerie said, her tone turning sour. “Total pencil neck. But still, Hailey, let the boy live a little. He’s eighteen. He’s supposed to be making questionable choices. It’s practically a rite of passage. Remember when you almost decided it was a good idea to date that human guy who kept pestering you? What was his name again? Chad?”
“His name was Brad,” I corrected, a flush of embarrassment creeping up my neck. “And that was
completely different.”
“How was it different?” she challenged. “A forbidden romance, a clash of cultures, the constant threat of your pack finding out… it’s practically the same plot, just with more fangs and less terrible pop music.”
She had a point. A very, very annoying point.
“I just have a bad feeling, Val.”
“You always have a bad feeling,” she said, her voice softening. “That’s your superpower. But sometimes, you have to let your kids fly. Even if you’re pretty sure they’re going to fly directly into a giant, blood-sucking
wall.”
I laughed, a real, genuine laugh that felt like it had been a long time coming. “You’re the worst.”
“I know. That’s why you love me. Now, are you free for later today? I want to hear all about this ‘bad feeling’ in person, preferably over a large glass of wine.”
“I’m free,” I promised. “You should send Phoenix and Giovanni over here, so we could have a girls night at yours. I feel like I have been drowning in mom duties so much, that I swear, I might lose my mind.”
She chuckled. “Don’t worry, honey! I’ve got everything sorted. You just be ready by 7, okay?”
“Okay,” I said, a genuine sense of relief washing over me. A night with my best friends was exactly what I needed. “Thanks, Val.”
“Anytime, sweetie,” she said, before hanging up.
I put my phone down on the nightstand, my mind already feeling a little lighter. A girls’ night was the perfect distraction. A chance to just be Hailey, not the Luna, not the mom of two hormonal teenagers, not the woman with a sordid past.

The door creaked open, and Aria peeked her head in. “Is aunt Valerie still on the phone? I wanted to speak
with her.”
“She’s not,” I said, a small smile playing on my lips. “But you and I need to talk.”
She walked in, her expression wary. “About what?”
“About Jake,” I said, watching her reaction closely.
Her cheeks flushed, a dead giveaway. “There’s nothing to talk about, mom! He’s just a friend.”
“Aria, you’re twelve. You are not allowed to have a boyfriend, or date. So, be careful.” I said gently, trying not to sound like a scolding parent. “You only started crushing on boys recently, and I don’t want you rushing into anything you’re not ready for. Besides, what would your father say?”
She rolled her eyes, a classic teenage move. “Dad wouldn’t care. He’d probably think it was cute. And I’ll be thirteen in two months!”
“Don’t test me, young lady,” I said, my tone a little sharper than I intended. “Your dad would definitely have a thing or two to say about you dating a human. Especially at your age.”
Her defiance seemed to crumble, replaced by a flicker of insecurity. “It’s not like that, Mom. We just… hang out. He’s funny. And he doesn’t know that I’m a werewolf. Please don’t tell dad, he’s going to change my school and I will not have any friends.”
“I know,” I said, my heart aching for her. I remembered what it was like to have a secret, to live a double life. But I also knew the dangers. “Just… be careful, okay? Humans are… fragile. In more ways than one.”
