CHAPTER TWOHUNDRED-SEVENTEEN-2
She nodded, her gaze fixed on the floor. “I will.”
I pulled her into a hug, my arms wrapping around her small frame. She smelled of jasmine and teenage angst. “I love you, sweetie. More than anything in this world. I just want you to be safe.”
“I love you too, Mom,” she mumbled into my shoulder. “And I’m always safe.”
I had to believe her. As much as she tried to be a grumpy teenager like her brother, she still had that
innocence of her. She was my baby and I hated that she was growing so fast, too fast. She went from needing me for every little thing to wanting to be independent so bad. It was a little heartbreaking watching her go through this ‘I’m not a little girl anymore’ phase, but I also understand that this was life.
This was the circle.
She pulled away, a small smile on her face. “Can I go now? I have to finish my homework.”
“Go,” I said, swatting her playfully on the butt. “And don’t forget to clean your room.”
She made a face, but nodded, leaving the room with a little more spring in her step. I watched her go, a mix of pride and sadness washing over me.
I spent the rest of the day in a state of quiet anticipation. The house felt empty with Liam and Dominic gone, and Aria was holed up in her room, probably texting Jake. I tried to read, to distract myself, but my mind kept wandering back to Liam, to Emilia, to the uncertain future that lay ahead.
By six, I was ready. I had picked out my favorite black dress, the one that hugged my curves in all the right places. I put on a little makeup, just enough to feel like myself again. I looked at my reflection in the mirror, a woman who had fought, a woman who had loved, a woman who had survived. And I knew, deep down, that whatever came our way, we would face it together.
Valerie’s car pulled up right at seven. I gave Aria a quick kiss goodbye, reminding her to lock the door, and practically flew out of the house, a sense of freedom I hadn’t felt in years washing over me. Valerie’s fourteen year old son, Phoenix would be spending the night at mine, with his father, Dominic and Liam. Allowing the two mothers to breathe from mother duties.
Valerie’s house was exactly as I remembered it, chaotic, colorful, and filled with love. They had moved to a bigger house five years ago, after Giovanni became the official Beta of the pack. The house was a modern mansion, with a stunning view of the forest and a pool that seemed to go on forever. It was a far cry from the small, cozy cabin we used to hang out in, but it still felt like home.
“You look amazing!” Valerie squealed, enveloping me in a hug that smelled of expensive perfume and champagne.
“So do you,” I said, taking in her silk jumpsuit and sky high heels. “As always.”
She winked, leading me towards the living room. “I’m making your favorite, and I got the good stuff.”
INDRED SEVENTEEN 2
The good stuff, as it turned out, was a bottle of aged werewolf wine, a potent brew that could knock a human out cold but just gave us a pleasant buzz. We settled onto her plush velvet couch, the clinking of our glasses a welcome sound in the quiet house.
“So,” she said, taking a sip of her wine. “Spill. Tell me everything. Don’t leave out a single, dramatic detail.”
And so I did. I told her about literally everything. The bad feeling I had about Emilia, the tension in the house, the way Liam had defended her. I didn’t hold back, letting out all the anxieties I’d been bottling up
for days.
When I was done, she was quiet for a long moment, swirling the dark red liquid in her glass. “Wow,” she finally said. “And I thought my life was complicated. Phoenix wants a new gaming console and Giovanni thinks I’m spoiling him too much.”
